We went to Snetterton for a Javelin track day on 19th October 2022. I say we went but it was only
@EthanMenace driving. I had intended to bring my Megane but it was off the road after a collision with a deer. Ethan had a day of tuition booked with Mike Epps.
@LiamP had recommended Mike and he was really good. His communication before the track day was good, he arrived well before he needed to, turned up with an intercom system, and gave really good instruction and feedback.
The weather conditions were perfect all day. It was a slightly windy but warm October day with no rain. The track was really quiet. The track day was obviously not fully booked and half of the garages were empty. At one stage in the afternoon there were only 3 or 4 cars on the track at any one time. I would guess there were less than 30 cars there all day.
There were some really nice cars out on track, a couple of Escort Cosworths, there was a VW Golf GTI TRC Touring Car (Isaac Smith), the usual collection of M cars, a few Lotus cars and a smattering of Renault Sports - but only one 182, a single mk 2 Megane and our 200.
We turned up knowing that Ethan’s best lap time from August 2022 at Snetterton was a respectable 2m 21s. I had seen a few Clio 197s/200s on social media that had lap times of 2m 15s with properly built and stripped out race cars. The plan was to (as always) enjoy the day but concentrate a bit more on driving technique rather than just giving it a go to go as fast as possible.
We had been using a RaceBox Mini for the past few months to record lap times. Helpfully with the Racebox data you can export sessions in a .vbo format. Mike was able to use his laptop and VBox software to look at the data and point out where time has been lost, time could be gained, and where better braking and steering technique would improve times.
Ethan did a couple of sessions in the car, Mike then had a session and set a lap time of 2m 18s as a target to work towards. Before lunch Ethan was getting better times and hitting 2m 20s.
A lot of the tuition was about braking later, braking harder, and using the brakes to dip the nose of the car to have better rotation in to corners. The other major point was about finessing the steering wheel rather than gripping it with white knuckles and holding it too tightly.
The Marshalls came over twice before lunch to say that the car had been exceeding track limits. Those track limits were the particular lines that Mike had suggested to improve lap times. We blamed it on Mike and the Marshalls were happy enough.
In the afternoon the chat between Ethan and Mike got more technical. After each session they would look at the data and work out where Ethan could improve. They both took turns to go out on track alone. Mike set a laptime of 2m 15s in the car. This was his second best lap time of 2m 16s:
@EthanMenace managed a fastest lap of 2m 18s by the end of the day:
If anyone is looking for some dedicated track day tuition then look up Mike Epps on Instagram. He was really helpful throughout the day and has given some genuinely good tuition that has improved Ethan's technique and speed.
Sadly we have no more track days booked for this year. We have managed to do 7 track days this year which is not bad.
Next year we will hopefully get to Oulton Park and Cadwell Park.
