We went to Brands Hatch for a Javelin evening track session on 10th August 2026. There had been no changes to the Clio other than fitting a brand new set of Direzzas on to the track wheels.
I have always enjoyed an evening session at Brands Hatch. The track is about 45 minutes from home so it is easy to get to. The crowd Brands Hatch attracts is not as bad as Donington, but you do get a lot of people turning up in their daily drivers to test them out on track.
We did the sighting laps and towards the end of
@EthanMenace's first session I kept hearing a cracking noise coming from the drivers side front wheel area. A red flag stopped the session. After one of the hubs snapping at Brands Hatch two months before we thought it would be sensible to check the front drivers side to see if we could work out what the noise was. It turned out to be the metal wheel weights that had been installed when the new tyres were fitted were struggling to stay on the wheel and were flying off as we were going round the track.
The red flag had been caused by a Twingo RS that had been going around. His engine let go around Clark Curve resulting in a white plume of smoke coming out the back of his car. Then when we followed him round to Paddock Hill Bend he had managed to hit the barrier on the right hand side just before Paddock Hill Bend and bounce back on the grass on the right of the circuit. Most accidents at Paddock Hill Bend send cars to the left hand side due to the speed and inertia.
I went out in the second session and was chasing a Megane 300 which had been fitted with some Nankang CRS tyres. I am not the fastest driver but was able to keep up.
During the evening the number of cars on track did become a problem. I think that the track session was either sold out or very close to capacity. There were number of cars circulating that just stuck to the racing line and did not let off or really give way to let you pass unless you had the power, or took a different line. One was a very slow MX5 and another was a Civic EP3 that had a full livery and looked like it should have been in the Type R Trophy race series. These cars were okay to manage because they were predictable even if they were holding up the traffic.
At some points in the evening you could send the Clio round Paddock Hill Bend and then suddenly end up in a queue of 6 or 7 cars at Druids behind a slow moving car.
In the third session when Ethan was driving the driver of a Mercedes AMG C43 convertible was being a bit of a twat on track. His car did not have the ability to brake late, or corner well, but he did have a lot of grunt in a straight line. He was holding up traffic and then just speeding off when he had the chance. We followed him round for a few laps as he was holding up an E92 in front of us. Then after coming away from Druids and in to Graham Hill Bend Ethan put his foot down and overtook the C43 at the corner. The C43 then decided to try speed up on the right hand side even though we had pretty much gone past the front of his car on the left side of the track. I got quite animated about it and was waving my arms about when he then veered towards the side of the Clio and then braked and ran out of track in front of him. I was really annoyed by the driver and for the first time in 6 years I went and told the staff that the C43 driver was a liability and needed to be spoken with.
My last session in the Clio was good. I did a lap time of just over 1m 00s which is the fastest I have ever been round the Indy layout. Ethan managed to pretty much equal his best time of 58.5s with me sat in the car.
We did spend a bit of time trying to work out the best approach and gear for Paddock Hill Bend. I have normally braked as late as I could then turned in once the car is settled and gone down the bend in 3rd gear. On Monday Ethan was experimenting in 4th gear with more progressive braking and a less aggressive turn in. I am sure the data will let us know what is the best approach.
The new tyres did make the car feel like it had more grip on Monday. It was predictably sliding around Graham Hill bend when then Clio was pushing.
It was a successful evening even if there had been heavy traffic on track and some drivers who could have driven a bit more sensibly. It would be interesting to see what other drivers made of our driving because at one stage a marshal held up a sign for Ethan that said "Steady".
We now have no track days booked until mid December when he have got a free day at Zandvoort thanks to Open Track - but we might do that trip in the Yaris.
