Slow and steady progress is being made stripping the interior.
Most of the plastics have come out now.
The radio and speakers have now gone. Years ago we spent a small fortune on finding an OEM bluetooth Renault radio and another few hundred quid having its firmware uploaded so it would work. But we are now trying to create a proper track car.
I still do not understand why there is cardboard stuck to the ceiling of the car.
Ethan has has weighed what he has removed so far which is basically the plastic trims, OEM door cards, the radio and speakers. He says that it came to 25 kilos.
The dash will be removed at some point so that we can get access to the sound deadening behind it.
The car will look very different when all of this work has been completed. It will be nice to have the base of the ZPO shifter in display.
Does anyone have a rough idea how much weight the Clio can lose from taking out the plastic trims, door cards, radio equipment, and sound deadening before trying to remove every other unused bracket and before touching the loom? I am not sure how far we will take the weight reduction idea but I was just curious to know how much weight this heavy beast can lose on a medium intensity diet.
We have decided to invest in some PMS top mounts to increase the amount of caster we can get on the front wheels. After Ethan installed some PMS top mounts on his Megane I came to realise that most Meganes have very little camber but cope with handling and cornering well because that have lots of caster.
As the car is now going to be fairly unpleasant to drive anywhere apart from a track we will also get some PMS solid engine mounts.
Hopefully we can get the new PMS parts ordered at the end of the month.

Hi Burrellbloke. Are you going to be keeping the siren unit after the stripdown? If so and if it is still working, would you be interested in selling it?

We did a cheeky track evening on Thursday on the Indy layout at Brands Hatch.
I took my GR Yaris and @EthanMenace took his Megane 250. We left the Clio at home.
I really enjoy driving the Yaris, it is a good B road blaster car and as it is a homologation special people will sometimes give me a wave or speak to me about it. My Yaris is completely stock and had a fresh set of Michelin PS4S tyres on it. Ethan had changed the front discs and replaced the front and rear pads at the weekend. As I was driving it about I couldn't help myself from thinking that I would be prepared to take more risks and might even be faster in the Clio.
The Clio feels really good on track at the moment and has so much grip through corners. It is both planted at the front and slightly lose at the rear when you want to push it.
During the track evening we swapped cars and I took Ethan's Megane out for a session, and he took out my Yaris. The Megane felt heavier to me but also felt more planted generally and especially when going thought Paddock Hill Bend. The power of the Megane was excellent on the straights.
Ethan managed to clock similar 59 second laps in both the Yaris and his Megane. He probably could have gone faster in the Yaris had the fear factor of smashing up my car been taken away.
Back in the world of the Clio this is the exciting work that is now going on, removing the sound deadening.

Think I once watched a program where they used dry ice to remove the sound deadening... is your car now "sound deafening"?

I did consider getting some but I'd seen a man with a mullet on YouTube do it quite effectively with a blow torch which I already had. It seemed to work pretty well.
I need to drive the clio to work a few days next week so I'll find out if it's made much of a difference noise wise!

Put road tyres on it if you do drive when stripped. The noise with semis will blow your mindIt's a white Renault Zoe

The strip down is making steady progress.
Ethan has now removed most of the interior so that he could remove the front carpets, sound deadening and the foam that goes all the way under the dash.
It all looks a right state now but once it goes back in it will look good, even if it does sound dreadful on the road.
So far about 44 kilos has been removed from the car.

The car has now been stripped of anything that was easy to pull off or remove. Some of the internal metal brackets have been removed but not all of them. There is a lot of excess wiring in the car. The one thing that we have kept in the car is the boot carpet so that when we put track day equipment in the back of the car it does not rattle around or scuff the newly uncovered surfaces.
We have a PMS drivers side foot plate.
PMS do not sell a passenger side foot plate so I contacted KIS Motorsport and they were able to sell me one that was not power coated so it looks similar to the driver's side foot plate.
Ethan has used the space left by the radio to properly install the Auto-Blip and also move the traction control and cruise control switches.
The interior is a "work in progress" but we have done some rough calculations and think that we have probably removed 50 kilos in terms of plastics, trim, and sound deadening.
We have purchased a PMS engine mount kit which has now been installed.

We did have a set of PowerFlex inserts in the OEM mounts before but the PMS mounts seem to be as solid as you can get. I started the car up with the throttle held at 2,000 revs and everything now vibrates. It is no longer possible to rock the engine backwards or forwards using your hands.
The car has not been for a test drive with the new engine mounts yet. As soon as the mounts were installed Ethan moved on to the next project which was to install some PMS top mounts to replace the Gaz top mounts that came with the Gaz Gold suspension. We are trying to get some extra caster with the PMS mounts.
We did take the car for a drive on Saturday before the PMS engine mounts were installed to see how noisy the car was stripped out and I thought it was okay. I used my Apple Watch sound meter app and it was reading about 80db when the car was being driven hard. The new engine mounts are likely to create some extra cabin noise. I haven't invested in any ear plugs yet but I suspect I might need some soon.
When Ethan look off the wheels to install the top mounts he noticed that the arch liners had been eating themselves. The car was last used at the Nurburgring and has not been on a track day since 1st July 2025.
It is obvious that when the front of the car is compressed the wheels are rubbing the arch liner away. It is not really a problem and we can run the car without arch liners. Our front set up runs slightly softer springs which we both think improves the set up of the Clio. One issue is that the bracket that holds a bolt so that the front bumper remains attached to to the arch, so that the car does not just rely on the plastic clips on the bumper and arch, is now a potential problem. On the front passenger side the paint has been rubbed away on the part of the bracket that is closest to the tyre which would suggest that the tyre has rubbed the paint off. We may need to create a new bracket or think about installing some AreoCatches and do away with the bracket.
The PMS top mount installation is on hold at the moment as some of the supplied spacers are not the right size, but we got the kit knowing that it was not something that PMS had supplied for Gaz Golds before.
The car is booked on to a Snetterton track day with MSV on Sunday 28th September 2025. When the PMS top mounts have been installed we will go back to AW Motorworks to get the front alignment done again and see how much more caster we can get. When we get the alignment done we will have the car weighed. The last time it was weighed was a few years ago and it was a hefty 1,230 kilos with 50 litres of fuel on board.

I weighed the wiring that I removed as well as the sound tar sound deadening, not including the boot section as that was removed years ago. Came in at 10kg
The wring was only removed from the connector in the passenger footwell back, not anything under the dash.

Here is a question for people who have stripped their cars.
I have dusted off my Windows 7 laptop and connected CLIP to see if I could get rid of the airbag light on the dashboard. I managed to guess my way through CLIP again and dealt with nearly all of the errors causing the dashboard airbag to light up, but I still have one.
I get error code DF091 which is a short circuit on the airbag locking switch circuit.
We have removed the switch which was on the drivers side.
Is there a solution to the DF091 error that I am getting?
The service manual seems to suggest that the switch needs to be wired in?
Can I solve the airbag light error with a different configuration in CLIP, or do I need to put the switch wiring back in?

I’m not beside my car right now, but I’m pretty sure I left that switch in and cable tied out of the way. I have removed everything else to do with airbags, crash sensors and seatbelts and coded them out

I never had a switch. Only thing keeping my airbag light on is I must've still had the side impact sensor connected when getting the light coded out as I only have a warning for that and when I reconnect it to the loom the light goes out.
