Thanks for the tip.

I ordered studs from PMS and did not bother with nuts to save some cash. But, I have just looked at TRS UK and the studs would have been about half the price if I had ordered from them.
Oh whao maybe everyones price has gone up (as with everything :worried: ), when I got the clio studs, they were way less than £3.70-£3.90 each. I see PMS is £5.50 :O

The gearbox has been opened. There was a smell of burnt oil as if the gearbox had got very hot.

This explanation was sent about the state if the gearbox: "3rd gear synchro is no longer synchronising, this has caused the sliding hub (which picks up synchro before the gear) to mash the gear, gear is harder than the sliding hub fortunately, so new sliding hub at same time as synchros."

There are a few missing teeth here.

The gearbox will be sorted in addition to some new output shaft bearings and new Gripper plates.

We did have some Fuchs Titan Sintofluid SAE 75w-80 oil in the gearbox before. Alex has suggested using someRedline 75W-110 or some Millers 75w-140 in the future.

These gearboxes really are shite.

Re: oil, I'm going back to Redline next time I change, I never had crunching using it, whereas I've noticed a little with the Fuchs. The gearbox always felt good with the Redline MTL GL4 75w80

I thought that with track use a gearbox would last around five years or so. Clearly we abuse our gearbox too much and it will require more regular attention.

I am considering whether an auto blipper might help prolong the life of the gearbox as I am useless at heel and toe.

Alex at AW Motorworks has finished the gearbox rebuild and Ethan collected it yesterday.

The gearbox work that has been done:
  • Stripped, cleaned, and rebuilt
  • Had the casing vapour blasted
  • New genuine 3rd and 4th gear synchros
  • New genuine output shaft bearings
  • New driveshaft seals
  • Gripper has been rebuilt with race/circuit spec plates.
When we had the Gripper installed the Clio was still being used on the road so it had a more tame set of plates in the Gripper. I am looking forward to finding out how much better the new Gripper spec is, and having a Gripper that is not work out.

Ethan has also finished rebuilding the front suspension and has now got the short studs on.

Now I have posted that picture I can see that the front discs look a bit scabby. We had intended to replace the front brakes with some Megane 3 calipers and bigger discs but the gearbox rebuild has used up most of the money that had been set aside for the new brake setup.

Whilst the subframe was off of the car I cleaned it. We have a nick in a CV joint that sprayed CV grease everywhere.

It looks okay now.

Hopefully the gearbox will go back in the Clio this weekend. We have invested in a gearbox oil drain temperature sensor to wire in to the CANchecked display to keep an eye on gearbox oil temperatures after Alex told us it smelt like our gearbox il had got very hot when he inspected the gearbox.

The gearbox went back in to the car yesterday. Despite the wet weather it was all done in about 6 hours.

The gearbox drain sump temperature sensor will be protected by the Clio's under tray.

The LSD sounded quiet when we took it for a test drive today. The gearbox seems to be working okay at the moment with the crunch in third gear now gone.

After our last track outing at Snetterton in January 2025 @LiamP pointed out that our oil pressure looked very low.

This caused us to panic that something may have been catastrophically wrong and that the engine was going to blow up imminently with worn or blocked oil channels. Fortunately it was my fault and I had not configured the sensor correctly for the digital display.

During today's test drive the oil pressure was reading much higher and showing pressure that was consistent with what it should have been up to 5.3 bar.

I did have a look earlier for some YouTube track day footage and it looked like a smallish short track. I would like to get round and drive on most of the circuits in the UK.
