Another *What car next* thread.

After buying the 197 last August and spending a fair bit on tyres / belts service / brakes - i've decided that it just isn't 'special' enough to justify its running costs and so i'm looking at buying a car around December of this year as a way of an upgrade.

I don't really have any definite criteria, other than it has to be no worse than 22 - 25 mpg mixed as it's my daily driver to work and a budget of circa 8500 - 9k, and it has to be trade.

So far my shortlist is VERY random and is as follows :

R26 - This is what I wanted instead of the 197, but at the time insurance was a joke plus they were a bit too pricey

350z - Tax bracket is a bit off putting, but the noise from that V6 is biblical

VX220 Turbo - A friends friend has one running around 240 bhp and the speed / handling just sublime - plus still see 35 mpg when cruising and servicing's cheap as chips too.

S2000 - Love the looks, the 9k redline and the proclaimed handling. Although insurance is EXPENSIVE, tax isn't bad if pre 2006 (£270) and i'm told they can be very 'twitchy' to drive in the wet.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI PPP (Circa 2004) - No reason other than i've always wanted to own a scooby - and that sound, love it. Insurance is one of the highest of the group.

Focus RS MK1 - LOVE THESE CARS. The only problem is as they were all a limited run, they are old cars now with high miles. Cheap to insure though and they have such a presence on the road.

Any car I choose will be staying pretty much standard.

Any other cars you want to throw into the mix?

Cheers

Anthony.

It's one of those questions only you can answer I'm afraid as its only you that's got to like it but if I was to pick another car it would have to be a Citren Blingo plenty of room for a fold up ramp for my wheelchair

Over the last week Ive seen some very tastefully modified Imprezas. Never really had an opinion on them before, just accepted that they were quick cars.

But now they look wicked. And will produce some big power and big smiles.

go on, get one.

I have to say - spending time looking at 'prezas on StanceWorks / Fatlace / Hellaflush makes me want one.

After further research - discounted the MK1 Focus RS, as Ford no longer supply parts, so sourcing new parts costs ridiculous money, as does servicing - also typical rust issues.

Also the VX220 - Just not practical for a daily driver - heater is pathetic, and a whiff of snow and it'll kill me.

350z - Looks a bit to 'bland' and dated after looking further.

Realistically....R26. Grown ups clio. remap, decat, intercooler...a safe 270+bhp. Diff comes free.....get 30 mpg and I'd love a white one.

How about a Volvo C30 T5 ? Not many about, cracking engine, easily tuneable

The engine's a gem as you say, aesthetically however they're not very pleasing.

Mk1 Focus RS
Here is my old one, about 300bhp and still better MPG than this 200 :001_unsure:

Lovely car!

From what i've read, finding parts is a nightmare though due to Ford stopping supplying spare parts for them? What are the running costs really like?

Why did you sell up for a 200 out of interest?

I never had any problems with it in the year I had it, so can't comment on parts, mileage was 50K if I remember right.
I used it as a second car to the Fabia VRS but general day driving it was 28ish mpg, my Clio shows 25 at best.

The reason I sold it was to buy my first house, kept the VRS for another 18months and then bought the 200. Would love another or to buy my old one back to be honest.

Cheers for the review there - insurance is far cheaper than the 197 too. I'll be keeping an eye on these for sure.

MK3 escort RST or MK2 FRS for me,that mark 1 focus does look seriously nice though

RSTs are ****boxes IMO, unreliable, handle like boats and not great looking.

MK2 FRS for my 9k budget? I doubt it somehow
