197 Cup F4RT track car

Some photos from today, a few Clio’s turned up also! Quite good there to be honest, well worth the trip there’s literally a bit of everything there for all tastes.

The Clio behaved pretty well, certainly pulls much harder with the new map and turbo, doesn’t run out of power as quick higher up the revs but it’s not something I’d advise for a road car as the turbo doesn’t really kick in until 3500rpm, but should be perfect for track.

Did have an engine light come on which I checked out the error and was crankshaft position learning error which from what I can see is from having single mass flywheel but this was mapped out on the first trip so want to make sure chris has left this on second time around. If not may be worth trying a new crank sensor.

Sorted the door cards today as they have been bugging me for a while, only completed the LH door for now but I’m happy with the simplistic looks.
Cut quite a bit out, removed wiring that wasn’t needed and then retaped the wiring loom.

I decided against using the normal door handle as I just didn’t like them so went with the theory if it’s good enough for a Ferrari F40 then it’ll do the little clio.

Also got some new rotors to fit and still need to take box out again to fit the plated diff and also need to weld the cage feet in place so still a fair bit to do.

Small update that I’ve been meaning to put up for some time!!

Track update finally!!!

Anglesey with Opentrack

Possibly one of my favourite days as they run a bike trackday the day after or before over last couple of years so I go with my mate with his bike and camp for a couple of night, which for me is what this is all about having a good time with your mates and enjoying the car. Anglesey also comes with some amazing views which is a bonus!

Car was very fast new brake discs were very impressive and car seemed to out perform all but the quickest of catherams but there was also some fast cars with not so fast drivers so tough to judge how quick the little clio is. But I’m very happy!!

So here’s some photos and a short video as I can’t seem to get my GoPro footage off my laptop easily I have to save an edit which then makes the video not “stitch-able” as it cuts some off [emoji2959]

Was at Brands GP on Friday which was brilliant here are some photos

So I’m also happy to report no overheating, which was still an issue even with the new large radiator, so it’s now sorted and was able to spend 20 mins out at a time with no issues. Added a secondary cooler to the turbo water system then some small bits like holes behind the number plate and lifting rear of bonnet about 5mm.

Roof scoop is added which I have no idea why I left it so long. If you use your car on track this is a must without ac this is the first track day I have done where I haven’t nearly drowned in my own sweat. Thanks to Matt/ @trackspec197 for the template.

Long post incoming...

So thought I’d do a quick catch up on the car and plans of work to it. Plus reasons as to why the progress has slowed.

Obviously there is a roof vent which I never mentioned before but clearly was there at brands. I fitted this the morning before setting off for the trackday which was probably brave, or stupid, but it’s one of the best things I’ve done. It gets so hot in these cars on track and this has completed transformed that thanks to @trackspec197 for sending me the template.

I had mentioned before about cooling. On these cars it’s literally been the worst part of the conversion, I have tried everything but ended up having to go down the route of an auxiliary water cooler used just for turbo coolant then goes back into standard system, and I added some spacing at the top of the bonnet to raise it slightly. At brands hatch for the first time on track I had no overheating issues.

So previously I mentioned I had a cheap run around this got boring very quickly, first ‘bland’ car I’ve owned but did serve it’s purpose. So went from the Volvo S60 to this as a daily

BMW 130i with LSD and birds B1 kit, I absolutely loved this car not as quick as I thought it would be but that engine is superb. Only sold this in Nov’ regret it already.

Then bought another Clio 182 I missed my old 172 cup.

Finally sold the BMW as I didn’t want to let go, it really was that good but mrs was not happy with the amount of cars I had. This was a mistake as it turns out I’m too old now to use a car like the 182 as a daily car to commute on the motorway 60 miles a day. So still need to sell the Clio but ended up on buying a megane R26 which really is a great all rounder.

The Megane needed some love to get up to scratch but there now.

So these two ‘extra’ Renaults have taken up a fair bit of my time meaning the Clio has had little work being done however that should be over now so onto the Clio again [emoji3060]

I kept the air con. I don't care if it takes a few BHP to run. I have got out after 20mins on track, and been shivering with the cold!. On the subject of overheating,( Mine was when I purchased it.), I found the fan was blowing the wrong way around. Overheating cured!.

I found there isn’t room for a condenser with a large intercooler hence having to get rid of the a/c you can run smaller coolers but then suffer with heat soak issues as the efficiency of the intercooler can’t keep up. I actually struggled with room for the larger radiator there really isn’t much space without further blocking the radiator which was my main concern.

As for overheating never an issue on road or a mild spanking but at constant high boost and revs on track the cars cooling couldn’t cope even with larger radiator. Also adding the spacers to the bonnet to aid air escaping helped but in my case it’s been a long battle with stopping this car overheating on track.

Anyone have any advice on pads?

Currently using DS1.11 but tempted by XP10

Don’t like RC6 and so on they break up and was not impressed at all in the condition of the pads after just a couple of track days.

DS1.11 I’m happy with but my discs are suffering I’ve only just bought them and already got some juddering so need to skim them and try new pads.

The pad that has given us the least disc issues is the Pagid RS29

We tried the XP10 and they were ok, we did have to skim the disks after one lock up in the wet at Oulton !

On the Meg' we've been using RST3's, had judder issues on Brembo HC plain disc's but no issues with grooved

Cheers mate I’m using rayland hook discs so fingers crossed can skim them only done two days with them.

Any ideas where to find RS29 pads for reasonable price? I’ve used them before on my old 235i I was very impressed with them but didn’t realise you could get them for the Clio

I’m just finishing a set of Winmax W5. Stronger performance than ds1.11’s but have killed the brembo HC discs. Kamracing sell them. Wouldn’t put you off
