Quick question - MOT failure. Front springs broken.

Hi guys,

Just a quick question. My cars just failed it's MOT with broken front springs.
I'm being quoted £452.40 for replacements which to me seems excessive. Am I right to think this?

Also I can't get it out of my head that it's odd for both of them to have gone at the same time.

Yes it's extremely dear considering you can buy new h&r or eibach springs for under £200. Good excuse to lower the car I think. Even if labour is included in that price you were given its still excessive.

If thats just for new springs to be fitted thats quite steep! I got some H&R springs for £160 then got them all fitted for £155! so £315 all done! shop about mate!

EDIT- this was for front and back by the way!

i would opt for some upgraded springs..as above-Eibach or h&r are available from £100 second handed..fitting on top around £100...

If they are fitting genuine springs, aren't cup ones about £120 a piece so that's £240
so £200 to fit them,
If it was me (I was in this situation about a year ago) I would get some aftermarket ones, I got cooksports. and get all 4 replaced

What may have happened is that only one of the front springs has actually snapped - however it is 'best practice' to replace both at the same time. So perhaps the garage wants to replace both on that basis - but they should really clarify that with you if that is that case. I would ask them the question before going ahead.

I was in the exact same situation as you recently in that mine failed the MOT because of one broken spring. The dealer advised me about it being best to replace both at the same time, however they gave me the option. Price-wise, it does seem excessive but I did pay a similar amount to that (I was in a situation where I needed the car back asap, so my hand was forced :001_huh:smile:. In hindsight I would have gone aftermarket and saved myself some money....

Either way, I would first check with the garage/tester whether it is just the one that has snapped, or in fact both.

Hi pal, my car passed mot yesterday and I had a broken spring o/s/f so replaced them with cooksport springs I got from @roscoe on here. They sit really well just to add) I fitted them myself in work, is quite steep for a set of springs fitted, what type of springs is that for ? I know buying them from renault is pricey! Would def get all 4 done at the same time or at very least the 2 that are affected either front or rear as if you fit one the other will most prob be weaker and will prob go in the near future!.

@Webby My front n/s spring broke last month and it cost me 2x £110 from Renault for genuine 200 cup springs and £170 fitting by Jade Development near Leicesters. So that's £390 all in! I was annoyed at having to spend so much tbh to fix a simple broken spring!

I have my old spring for sale if you're interested (the one that wasn't broken) - it's a 200 cup spring so it has orange and blue identifier dots.

Keen to know what steps you followed to remove the struts (lots of options seem to be available) ...

Hi montana I removed the wiper arms and then I removed the pinch bolts from the struts, the pinch bolts where very tight but a bit of persuasion and they moved. I then disconnected the steering column from under the drivers footwell .then I removed the track rod ends. I then put a transmission stand under the subframe and lower the subframe down about 20 inches enough to give the carriers a chap down of the struts then 3x 13 mm nuts on each side removes the strut from the car. We have a spring compressor in work to change spring the refitted in the same order. All in took about 3 hours. If you need to know anything else just let me know mate.

Thanks, i tried and failed at the pinch bolts and got a garage to do it, however should i need to tackle in the future going to give it a go again, cheers :thumbup1:

Thanks chaps,

Yeah this is an annoying situation as the car had been on the ramp at Ren Coventry 2 months previously for drivers side hub and bearing. Cov claim that they would of noticed a broken spring then so to have both go in 2 months...

Jimmy - your explanation seems the most logical answer.

So I rang around for quotes yesterday and after Wolverhampton came in at £550 I decided that I'd just go ahead based on getting the car back today. NOT TO BE. Just had a phone call to say they can't get the parts for another 7-10 working days.

Rang KTEC and they can get me the parts for £234 (4 Eibach springs). Local garage will fit everything for me for £260.

montana the pinch bolts were really tight so I just game them a very and I mean very slight heat as the hub carriers are alloy so wouldn't take much to weaken or melt! It was a bit more awkward than the normal springs / struts you would do but are not the worst.

very expensive ..£260 just to fit them??my mechanic did it for me for £80..wouldnt agree with that quote..

Webby well the fact that they have quoted you 7-10 days at least allows you to shop around a bit instead of having your hand forced. There will spring sets out there for less, as CallorFold has linked you to.

Yeah I agree with everyone £260 is very expensive indeed. I would take nowhere near that to fit them to be honest! I would say £100 max for this job and if you shop about will get them fitted for roughly about that I would imagine.
