Getting a little bored of my car, mainly the lack of power. Recently i really been liking these but the misses says its a terrible idea. anyone else got thoughts on it?

Don't they have a reputation for being very heavy on maintenance?

Also it is a much older car than your Clio.

Not sure what these are like with rust, but it should be a consideration.

I get the impression that a Scooby is a safer bet.

Go for it Ben, theres a couple of Vs and Vi's that go to the knockhill track nights we go to and they are close to being the quickest cars there.

They are fully stripped and caged though.

Check out Bruce Taxi's Evo on youtube.

If your near a good specialist I'm sure the owner/dealer wont mind taking it there for them to have a look over if it's a good un.

would have an Evo of that era over a Scooby of the same period... later model Evo's are even nicer... all depends on budget though really!

however, one thing i have found is no matter how many times i change car, nothing touches a clio for handling... S2000 was probably the best engined car i've ever owned, fastest too but it needed to driven with more respect.

i guess it all depends on what you're after...

Im not a fan of the old evo's if I am honest. Evo X or IX, then yes I would be well happy but Iv heard too many bad things about the old ones to even consider them - most of which was mentioned by Ralphy. If you have the cash to burn keeping it going as well as modding then go for it...

Oh and fair enough if you are driving it, then you dont have to look at the outside of it, but everyone else does...

Lol dont get me wrong if there was a supercharger kit avaliable right now with proven reliability i'd buy that instead. But the lack of tuning options on the 197s is a major pain in the arse.

Would much rather luv an Evo 8 but i could never afford one.

yeah its not the buying of the car, its running costs. If you think the clio is tough on the fuel forget an Evo, when ragging it will drop into single digits. You can cut corners with servicing by doin it yourself, but any parts will cost a **** load if something breaks.

Although the tune-ability is insane, personally if you think you can afford to live with it I'd go for it. Have one in a heartbeat. Isn't the one in the pic a tommi makinen edition? like hens teeth but epic cars.

Gimme an Evo 9 MR 340 any day

I dont have any issues with running costs on the 197 i only use it at the weekend anyway, as i would with this car.

My only problem is im going from a nice new fresh 2008 car to a 2000 car and i dunno if i could get on with the lack of refinement and build quality.

if you can afford the fuel and servicing costs do it - my mates got an evo 6 (i think or a 7) fq300 and he loves it 10mpg and 4500m service intervals !!!!

You've just answered your own question then

Makkinen edition? I had a 2004 blobeye scooby before my R27, really miss the speed and torque from the turbo engine. I would have another, but at the minute with fuel prices as they are they dont really make sense. Mine was standard apart from exhaust, and I very rarely got over 22mpg driving it steady. Servicing was horrendously expensive as well. As Foxspeed said, service every 4500 miles will damage the bank balance considerably. And if you dont do it, it will harm you come re-sale time.

I can relate to that :hug:8)

Come over to the dark side mate :jedi:
