197: Slight knock on throttle let off? - VIDEO ADDED

Where you frim ripgrove, a renault specialist solved mine in the end. As for engine mounts when you got excess to the mounts make sure the securing bolts are tight and the mount is pulled forward. But if its doing it going over speed bunps i cant see it being mounts, more like suspension or drive train, a way to check mounts would be to fit a big washer to the centre of the top mount.

What do you mean about the washer? Are you reffering to how the strut top knocking issue on mk2 Clios can be solved? Had that issue on my 172 Cup and even with machining my own precise washers i never cured it properly. Will be stripping the strut tops next weekend so will have a look and maybe even fit new ones while i've got it apart. I'm down in Gloucestershire, not quite reay to pay for someone else to poke around yet until i've done everyting i can do.

Well not so good news for me I'm afraid, a guy from Renault called me and he said that there is definitely a noise coming from somewhere (WOW well done he must be a rocket scientist or something) but I'd have to pay around £200 maybe more for investigation ONLY and even then they could not guarantee that the problem would be covered by extended warranty (which is fair enough if it is a wear and tear issue).

Bear in mind that I have already paid £100 in the beginning for investigation (that was for the knocking and another issue) but the most frustrating thing is that had I known that they'd ask for such money I wouldn't have taken the car there in the first place! I'd better pay a renault specialist any day of the week! Such a waste of time but lesson learned...I'm so NOT renewing the extended warranty.

Oh dear! My strut tops are next on my list for being pulled apart, sounds like yours is engine/gearbox mount (maybe exhaust manifold knocking in the tunnel) and mine is more suspension related. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it all!

I have this issue too, will be giving mine to Rentech for a thorough trawl through everything to see if they can pinpoint it before I give it to Renault to fix under warranty.

Interesting/odd that it only seems to occur when the engine's cold though.

No one have any ideas why that would be? You'd think if something was loose, it would knock all the time...but this magically cures itself once the engine and gearbox are warmed through.

Very strange.

Please keep us updated mate. Cheers

its the engine stabiliser mount on the left top of the engine, renault will change under the warranty,

Its not that, have just fitted a new one and still have the cold knock and a suspension type knock. Please read the entire thread as some things have already been looked at.

Been doing some detailed testing, my engine cold knock is actually there all the time even when warm its just quieter when warm, this occurs on throttle let off. And my 'other knock' definatley seems suspension related (drivers side only) and appears louder when driving off speed humps slowly, if i drive a bit faster i can't hear it?!

i would take it to a specialist mate, because you could change this and change that, spend a couple of hundred quid on parts, and it could be something stupid that would cost **** all at a specialist. it happened to me, changed engine mounts, exhaust mounts, in the end it was the lower arm link (which is on the passenger side) and cost me all in £52 for them to do.

try this little test, i heard the mechanic say this to me when he test drove it round there yard. drive slowly round a empty carpark, full lock both ways. he did this round the yard and said he knew striaght away it was that link.

Will try that thanks  Will have a look around for my nearest specialist then I guess.

yeh just give the steering a good working, might even help if the car park is slight uneven (not badly). but from what your describing i recon it could be the link, mine went really bad within a few weeks, but i do drive alot. every time i took it to renault it decided it didnt feel like doing it. lol

I had a look through the old threads and I realised that this issue has been discussed before in several occasions. Have a look here (2000 views!!)

However at the end the knocking still remained a mystery which is a bit worrying. I took my car at the dealers this morning, I made it clear that the knocking is only when the car is cold (first thing in the morning) and I'll probably leave it there till tomorrow so as when they test drive it in the morning to make sure the knocking is not there.

I told them to check everything (gearbox-engine-suspension mounts, driveshafts, steering rack the lot). I also emphasized the fact that I won't be taking the car back if this issue is not sorted, the car is still under warranty and there is definitely something wrong there.

So, fingers crossed. For any updates I'll keep you posted.

Top stabiliser bar. Had exactly the same thing. £45 for a new one and easy to fit.

Top stabilizer bar?? Do you mean the top engine mount mate? I haven't changed it but mine looks solid and it doesn't make the ''knocking'' sound that Ripgroove's top mount does in the video...

Mine makes a knock when turning left at slower speeds/closer to full lock, so I'm guessing mine has gone. What's another way of telling its the lower arm link?-put it on a jack and see if theres any play in the wheel?

When mine was in the air, he said he could move it quite easy as it was loose, but it was quite bad. I dont know what it looks like other that its a small link bar and said its only on the passenager side but dont take that gospel. But it is short low.

Well it would make sense it being that if my noise is coming from the passenger side when on near full lock turning left. I shall have a look when I do my discs, pads and braided lines at the weekend. I'm also taking it for an MOT so may be picked up then as well. Cheers for the help

Hopefully going to my local specialist next Saturday.

Keep us posted mate. I'll hopefully book mine@Mark Fish for the end of this month, (depends when the parts I'm waiting arrive) so I'll pop there to do the fitting + to have this problem checked out.
