197: Slight knock on throttle let off? - VIDEO ADDED

Just found this thread.

I wish I had found it earlier. I'm having exactly the same symptoms and apparently it's the hub carrier ball joint. I'm quoting:

''I got a knock pulling away from the front right corner and also changing to 2nd. also going over speed bumps or taking the car off the drive.

also when going round left handers if i went over a bump it would knock too

thats all gone now''

I hope this part is covered by the extended warranty...

Have you had dealers look at it yet.
Mine had same issues as above and it wasnt the ball joint on the hub carrier. So i wouldnt be sure if it was that.

ok Ryan good to know. I'll jack it tomorrow to see if there is a 12/6 play on the wheel or something. It's going to the dealers on Thursday..

OK a bit of an update. I took the car to the dealers the other day and I left it there for them to test drive it first thing the following morning and so they did. They heard the knocking noise and they quoted me around £200 for the invstigation ONLY because apparently they had to srtip everything out. As you can realise I left and took the car to a mechanic friend (not a Renault Sport specialist).

He checked it all around (ball joints, engine mounts, exhaust, ARB links the lot) but he couldn't find anything, nothing at all apart from a play at the link that connects the steering column to the steering rack.

Now, I have to add here that since I bought the car there was a small play in the steering, ONLY WHEN STOPPED though. At that time (must be a year ago) I took the car to Enfield Renault (who deal with renault sports by the way...eh....and now we laugh) and they said that it was absolutely normal and they couldn't fault it. So I guessed that everything was fine and that was how the steering should be.

Anyway, back to today, my mechanic had that part replaced with a new one (£350 total costs, warranty covered) and now my steering is simply superb! Nice and stiff, no play at all! But guess what....THE BLOODY KNOCKING NOISE IS STILL THERE!!

The mechanic said that nothing is loose, nothing is worn, he really can not pinpoint anything! He mentioned something about the cat but he wasn't sure so we decided to leave it for now and if it deteriorates in the future we'll have a go again. I really had enough with that, at least it does it only when cold so I suppose I can live with that given that everything in the car is spot on...

What about you Ripgroove? Any updates?

Sorry about the long post by the way...

No news from me, went to Renault specialist who didnt test drive it, said nothing was loose under the car at all, then charged me £42 and said if the knocking is still there then i might want to look at the lower engine stabilizer mount? (useless tbh) So might whip the mount off this weekend, have a look and if its worn i'll get a new one.

I posted the problem on clio sport forum and that was the asnwer I got

''it will most likely be down to either the upper rear lateral tie bar or the main gearbox rear mount. They look fine but are made from cheese and only seem to knock from true cold start and even then only for a few minutes. Either live with it or replace it... They're around £65 iirc''

I'll probably replace both on service time just in case...

Good info, have replaced my upper one already so just need to look at the lower.

I've sot a set of the vibra technics mounts (un fitted) and suprisingly that top mount is the one that seems to go often but is not part of the set.

Perhaps it's time to ask vibra technics if they can make one and get a group buy going.

With the all vibra technics on the car you dont need the top stabliser bar, it states it on ktecs website.

Small update, took the lower engine stabilizer off today and its fine so that's not very helpful. But while it was removed it allowed me to swing the engine about on the other mounts which for me at least ruled out any engine mount or exhaust knocking as I got no strange noises while swinging the engine about.

I also have discovered this prob. Mine seems to be on cold starts too and is when I release the clutch on a change up. I left mine low speed in 2nd n tapped the throttle a few times n everytime the revs diped as i releasd the pedal it knocked :s. haven't noticed anything while turning or going over speed humps though. Having a mate look tomorrow (mechanic) so I will see what he comes up with. What a nightmare!

I'm having mine booked@Mark fish to do some fitting, I'll ask him to check that noise as well. Already 2 garages investigated it (one was renault) and they couldnt pinpoint anything. Everything is fine/stiff/solid, no play anywhere, no nothing. I guess I'd have to live with it for now till it deteriorates. Updates next Wednesday. What about you Ripgroove? Any news from yesterday?

Pretty much given up with the knocking on throttle let off. I have quite a loud knock coming from drivers side suspension that 2x garages have failed to diagnose now, getting pretty hacked off with the Clio now.

Both garages are sure there's nothing at all loose under the car, one of them was a Renault specialist too. This knock is real loud too.

i dont really know alot about engines but i have seen my mate this morning who is a mechanic and he has told me its the inner rack end and track rod end thats causing my problem. i dont know if this helps anybody or anybody has been told this yet? also does anyone know if you buy a 2nd hand car from a dealer, by law do they have to give you 3months warranty?

I been told my rack end on my passenger side could do with doing, so getting that done Tuesday but my knocking sound is coming from the drivers side.
