Mapped?

Hi all,

So I just bought a 2011 200. The guy I bought it from says the car has previously been de-catted, but being a garage he had to sell it with the cat back on.

Driving the car there seems to be a bit of delay when you touch the throttle, there is a little over-run when you let off the throttle also. The car is pretty loud by all accounts, even though I'm informed it's all in standard trim, and when you really wind it up it pops and bangs on the gear change. I'm pretty sure it would've been mapped if it was decatted, but aside from plugging it in?

Also if it is mapped I assume I won't be doing any damage to anything with the car being put back to standard form? At best I'd assume it's bunging more fuel than it needs in being strangled by the cat and restricted airfilter (also back to oe, although I've no idea if that has ever been changed) and that is whats causing the overrun and pops/bangs. Not overly sure what would be causing the hesitancy when pressing the throttle though. Leak on the air intake possibly?

I'm going to get the car thoroughly gone over in the near future as the miles are getting up there now, so want to get all the bushes, mounts etc all checked out. It's very clean (apart from a small blemish on the boot lid under the wiper).

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

If it’s an aftermarket exhaust (which it definitely sounds like as the original is very quiet), it is difficult to say if it’s been mapped or not.

I’ve had a non-res decat exhaust in the past which would pop and bang without being remapped.

I should imagine a tuner would be able to tell if the car has been mapped or not by looking at the ECU (happy to be corrected).

I guess one issue would be if it has been mapped, is it chucking a load of extra fuel in on overrun, potentially resulting in borewash or damage to the exhaust cat? Adding the cat back in isn’t all that bad as secondary cats are cheap enough at ~£50 (assuming the car has been mapped and is chucking enough fuel in to negatively affect it) but engine damage isn’t.

The above isn’t to scare you but to give you a better picture overall. Best bet is to talk to someone who maps these and to see if it has been remapped.

Hi DS197,

It'll take more than that to scare me, I've owned my fair share of French cars in the past from AX GT's to 205 GTI/Mi16's haha  I'll try to get the car onto a ramp, and do some more research to figure it out.

Quite enjoying the rally-esque old school noises to be honest. Not sure my neighbours are :tongueout:

Thanks

Steve

My 197 has a gravity exhaust, with cat delete and has been mapped and pops and bangs constantly......it also has a map done by previous owner.
being a track car this isn't an issue, but it is LOUD

Hi all,

Had a small moment last night when I left work which pretty much confirmed to me I have a non standard map on the car.

Came to a roundabout to go right, accelerated away from the roundabout and it bogged down (very nearly stalled) and had to be feathered for a bit when the car was cold. So I'm pretty sure its overfueling.

I'm told previously the car has been decayed (but it isnt now) and I checked the airfilter last night and it looks very new (and oe) so I'm thinking the car is mapped for a more 'free flowing' setup, and as such with the OE kit back on it's getting too much fuel.

So at the risk of being ostracized by everyone, for now I need to get the car remapped for the standard setup (or at least the setup I currently have).

I've seen a place called Southern Mapping near Newbury, and also Horsham Developments who have a great reputation amongst the Nissan Z community. Both of which are reasonably local to me, but would I need a specialist Renault mapping place for this? I mean mapping is just mapping right, doesnt matter what car is wrapped around the engine, as long as they have the software and a decent reputation?

Thanks

Steve

The front Lambda can have a short I did not expect it but I bought an RSTuner box when driving the box was logging and an error apeared when driving through the same problem as you experenced but no dash warning light but, box was giving the front lambda short code when the car was turned off and restarted the error disapeared so I had a spare front lambda and changed it and problem solved. The car needs all stored emission errors erased or the car goes to safe fueling mode. I woulkd take it to a Renault mapper place they will be able to see straight away if a sensor or something is reading wrong than have someone map the car to a problem part even take the car to Renault and have the ECU flashed to standard.

Honestly, there’s no reason why you can’t take it to a mapper nearby.

The two arguments for using a Renault specialist for mapping would be:

1) To eek out every last tenth of a horsepower as they do these cars day in day out with all sorts of mods, building up their knowledge (especially in regards to torque limits for Meg’d Clios).

2) They also possess the Clip diagnostic tool so if there’s any sensors acting up, they’ll be able to diagnose them there and then.

Does any of this matter if your car is driving fine and you just want a safe map? Not in my opinion. I’d crack on and get it mapped from them.

The RS tuner is another option worth looking at as it’s one you can do at home.

Yeah I dont need every last tenth of a horsepower. It's a daily, so reliability is top priority for me really. Will try and get mapped locally, and report back!

Thanks
