197: Major Service.

The major service is due on my 197 in march, long time away i know but im just getting some thoughts.

Just after the service is due to be done i will be looking to sell as i would have owned the car 2 years and i like to change every 2. But...

Do I get the service done first or not?

Now i always have the servicing etc done but will forking out that much just before i sell be worth it or is it just dead money?

I want to get it done as i think it will help it sell, the main question im looking for advice on is wether or not to get it done at a dealer or not. Obv the pros of this are there will be the stamp to prove this.

My other option is having my friend ( a qualified renault mechanic) do it privately for me, considerably reducing the cost.

Would this put you off, knowing it had been done privately and not through a dealer and therfore having no stamp in the book?

Sorry for the massive right up but im just trying to get a feel of peoples thoughts.

Cheers

once mine was out of warranty i have done the services over and above the requirements

if you have receipts cant see it being an issue

i havent got the tools to do the cambelt so will probably be getting it done on the side via a renault techy - but will buy genuine parts etc

i have all its spends and history in a folder:smile:

I suppose it depends on whether you are prepared to drop the price by the cost of the service? It will be a big haggling point for any potential buyer.

im prepared to get the service done as id like to know it has been done, i want the car to be looked after and it will be good for the new owner for it be have been done.

But if its going to put people off by having in done privately with no stamp then i dont want to go down that route. It will all be done with genuine parts etc and by a very experienced renault mechanic. All my reciepts are always kept so will be no problem proving its been done but i didnt knoe wether potential buyers would be funny about it

I think one of the worst things people can say when buying a car is 'my mate services it for me'. It always makes me think 'ye right pal, pull the other one.' Maybe it's just me, but it makes me think the seller is untrustworthy. There's nothing better than having a nice Renault stamp to show off to any prospective buyer.

The other thing to remember is that the kind of person likely to buy a 197 will be a car freek like the rest of us on here and will want to see the car has been cared for. This is all just my opinion though, it's your car and your are free to get it done anywhere.

A specialist could offer the best of both worlds though?

I totally agree with Arran here, a purchaser is going to want some evidence that it was done, and done by a garage, not "some bloke". Might not make total sense but it gives more piece of mind.

You'll never recoup the value of the cambelt service when you come to sell...but if it hasn't been done you'll have a hard time selling as it's an immediate expense any prospective purchasers would rather do with out.

Mine is due in September, will probably get it done through Renault. Gives some piece of mind and there should be some come back if all goes wrong

Ye, sometimes people are just glad that Renault have done the work and you can go in and say 'this cambelt was only 5,000 miles ago and it has snapped, what you going to do?' for example.

Mine is being done by Reno techs with the genuine parts of Karl with receipts at a fraction of the cost can't see why I should pay double and worry if Renault have done the job correctly when I know the local ren spec gives m 110% confidence and a stamp
