@Colesy If it helps, when mine developed a crunch going into 4th, it was taken to a specialist in Manchester to have the gearbox repaired. Ended up costing a total of £660.
Seems like going down this route is my best option, it's reassuring that it should be 'only' around £660 to fix. I've been recommended a gearbox specialist in Peterborough so I will have to get in contact with them. Thanks for the info!

As others have said though, it's worth changing the gearbox oil first in case this solves your issue. If it doesn't then yeah, either new gearbox or rebuild by a specialist.
 
You are much better off going to a specialist and not through a dealer, I'd be very surprised if they go much lower in terms of contribution and that price is astromical. I had mine repaired by an ex Renault mechanic with a new clutch fitted and full service for £650 + Clutch price as I bought this myself. Needed 2 Synchros and another part which I can't remember the name of, have they only quoted you for a replacement box and not for a box repair? The whole box doesn't need replacing unless it's damaged that seems seriously overkill, mine was in at 8am and rebuilt and serviced by 6pm ready for me to pick up.

my car has 96000km's, now going in for the third gearbox...well actually I'm getting it rebuild and replacing the clutch and upgrading to Quaife.
 
Has gearbox reliability improved since the introduction of steel synchros?

It's still very much pot luck unfortunately. There doesn't seem to be any kind of pattern to it really.

I didn't think though that any of the gearboxes came with uprated synchros from the factory? I thought it was just the parts you could now buy that were changed...I might be way off target there though...

I also think that they didn't came with uprated synchros from factory but there are gearboxes that were rebuilt using steel synchros so I wanted to know if the steel ones keep breaking like the old brass ones.

Ah ok, got ya. I haven't heard of any that have failed with the steel synchros, but someone else may have other information to offer??

An old thread, but inspired by some recent comments I'm on original box at 22+k miles with a couple of track days in my ownership.
 
Anyone had the problem that when the car is cold it's really hard to engage a gear ?

Think it's just the nature of the boxes, mine does it when cold and mine was refurbished 5k miles ago.

I find it helps to stick it in 3rd first then it slides into 1st a lot easier.

I agree. When it's very cold down here, I usually put the car is gears 3 and 4 a couple of times. 1st is a lot easier to select after this.

Was a thread about this recently when we had a cold spell.

Consensus was quite a few of us found it harder to engage gears whilst car was cold / first thing in the morning etc

A bind: but seemingly no big issue.....
