Had my car into the main dealer on Monday to get their recommendaction of a £2k new gearbox (4th gear crunch) only to discover a) The RAC warranty that a different main dealer gave me doesn't cover main dealer labour charges and b) the warranty company wants someone to diagnose the specific problem to see if it's repairable.

Off to an indy gearbox specialist I go and they've discovered that the 4th gear synchro is shot and 4th gear is worn down - a warranty assessor is going to look at the gearbox tomorrow or Monday but the garage suspects they'll call it 'wear and tear' and not cover it...on a 4 year old 37k car!

Had an open line of communication with Renault complaints department the whole time (both regarding **** dealer provided warranty and chocolate gearbox) and they've said that if the warranty company mug me off that they'll review it...fingers crossed as I don't fancy £570+vat for the repair the garage has quoted!

Can anyone who has had positive outcomes PM me with their vague details of their issue and what contribution they got towards repair? A reg would be handy as if there's a precedent with other cars it would be good to be armed with the particulars!

I have an RAC warranty as well, I didn't know they didn't cover main dealer labour charges! ****s! My second gear has been crunching occasionally so I imagine the synchro is on its way out.

Please let me know how you get on

Check with RAC by phoning them but if you got the warranty from a dealer I suspect it would be the same level as mine.

I know it's the responsibility of the individual to check T&Cs etc but if it's given to you at a main dealer you'd hope it meant you could take it back there, especially at £95/hour!

Seems as though in the last couple of months there's been an epidemic with box failing all over the shop.

Got the go ahead today new box on order from France:clap:

The crunch shall now be abused:lol:

I thought that the other day after mine got confirmation of the problem - then I thought "hang on, if they're stripping and rebuilding the 'box it's better that 4th isn't abused!"

just so everyone knows what the problem is with the syncro's....

they are made from carbon (like honda boxes) and over a period of time they are breaking down and leaking the carbon bits in the box oil...

All new boxes are again being fitted with brass synchro's

Would renault have info on cars that have had gearbox changes?

If it has been changed before you owned the car.

carbon what ????

Hopefully collect mine tomorrow, the dealer said when they took my box out it had writing on it in yellow paint suggesting it had been changed before

Still not got it back, apparently they have work booked in, and its only been 10 days. The dealer in the iom is utter w@nk so I won't be buying a Megane Coupe from them. I'd sooner travel to see Karl

Spoke to RAC Warranty company today and they're going to cover the gearbox repair for 4th gear+synchro - saves me £570+VAT and I got it in the garage 4 days before my warranty ran out!

Garage is reporting my clutch is worn (4 years old and 37k miles??) could this be a side effect of the gear box or is it potentially nonsense?

whislt the gearbox is out its best to have the full (3-part) clutch assembly changed....false economy not to have it done - will be minimal labour cost as the gearbox is already out for repair so half hour labour for changing it
