Dreaded 4th gear crunch

My 4th gear started crunching about a week ago, so as i see on here it seems to be a common issue.
I have just phoned renault uk to see what they can do for me as this many cars with the same issue is not right.

My car is out of warranty.
2010 plate
Done 34k miles.
Any advise from anyone who has had the same issue would be great.

Have dealt with a couple of these in work (I work for a Renault main dealer here in Northern Ireland).

The outcome is always favourable for the customer especially with low mileage, what will also go in your favour is if you have owned Renaults before and if you have a dealer service history.

You will be required to leave the car into your local Renault dealer.

Good luck!

Nice one , cheers for the heads up, just waiting on a phonecall back to see what can be done. What do we think is a reasonable contribution towards a gearbox replacement, from the info i put about my car?
I have had one service outside of renault, so dont know if they will hold that against me.
Also when it was under warranty i took it to renault to see about the gearbox, not being able to get into gear etc. And they said its just the way it is.
Thanks

That would all depend on the person managing the case.

Your car is on a 2 year service schedule so has it had one service at a dealer and one non dealer?

As for going to your dealer for advice on the gearbox, unless that's been logged on a system then there's no real proof.

Yes one at the dealer and one non dealer.
He has just phoned me and says to get my car booked in at renault, get a diagnostics done, if the gearbx is knackard he can then start looking at costings. Im just trying to figure out what would be a fair contribution, looking at other peoples outcomes on here.

mark200 any progress on this? I've got the same problem. 2010 car and similar mileage. Would be interested to know how you have got on. Cheers.

Hi copse
I'm also dealing with Renault over the 4th gear crunch.
I was offered a 50% contribution to 'investigate' the problem. ie labour to take box out and refit.
Waiting to hear back on the worst case overall cost and if they will contribute to a recon box or repair.
We have got a 59 plate 200 with 41k
This is our tenth renault, 5 have been Renaultsport cars. I think this helps along with dealer servicing.
will update this thread.

Phoned Renault UK today and was put through to head of customer support who is now 'handling' my case. Car booked in with local dealer for diagnosis next week. Said we could discuss the cost after that. But I'm not hopeful as mine is my first Renault, a 2010 bought privately and I've not used main dealers for services!
Btw I've been advised to replace the clutch at the same time while the gearbox is out.
I'll keep you updated. Good luck!

I've had a 3rd gear crunch for a while now but if changing gear very slowly/carefully I can do it without a crunch. It's still annoying how ever so would be interested in hearing the price for it being sorted. Keep us updated, cheers.

I was in the same position when mine went. Renault basically told me to go **** myself

I bought a recon box of ebay and took it to my local ren specialist who fitted it for me. Definitely worth doing the clutch and slave cylinder at the same time

Hi copse
Had an offer from Renault today, just need to tie up some loose ends before deciding if to go with the Dealer for the repair or use the local Renault specialist. Will pm you the details tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks robsnell that would be great as I'm taking mine to the dealer to diagnose the fault. Fingers crossed but I'm expecting the worst!

can you let me know the cost too robsnell my 4th has started crunching too. 59 plate 43k.

People have to realise that the cost is on a case by case basis. Each case takes into consideration service history, any previous Renaults, mileage, year etc etc.

You are 100% correct. I was going to pm the cost price quoted and the contribution % for my case, which hopefully should be good for my particular Renault history.

So Renault have been in touch. The gearbox will cost £2370 to be replaced and Renault pay half. I'm fairly pleased considering that my car is 18 months out of warranty, I bought it privately, have never used main dealers and it's my first Renault.

Claire Meehan who is Renault UK customer services manager dealt with the whole thing brilliantly. If anyone else has the same problem, try asking to speak to her straight away.

That seems a reasonable amount, given your circumstances. 50% is very good imo. And it's good to hear that Renault have dealt with it well too.
