CLIO 197 CUP - Project TF

That would be my plan but it would be next year before I look properly at it. As I would need car to be able to tow with to start.

Trailering has definitely lessened my worries of my 197, especially competing. Just means you can send it 100% and not have to worry about getting home with it, just pop it on the trailer and drive!

No real progress or changes on the car made since my last update. But I am at Cadwell park tomorrow with it! To which I am quite excited for providing the weather stays fairly good. As the last time I was at Cadwell it was a sleet covered day.

I still have not fitted the diff that I got in the black Friday sale last year; it annoys me that this still isn't done but I have to remind myself that other things do get in the way at times.... I'm two mind now with the unit. Partly tempted to sell said diff and wait for a car being broke with a gripper installed to come up and just swap boxes over.

So what feels like an age since Cadwell here's a little write up of the day.

So what are the the big changes to car since the last time out at Blyton? Simply put there are no big changes of note to the car. The only minor thing done was adjusting the settings on the shocks of the rear of the car.

Cadwell Park - 14-06-2024.

In what seems to be a recurring theme for trackdays in 2024 I had mixed feelings towards the day; primarily due to the weather as it was forecast to be a washout with this changing towards the day of the event to be a rainy day with sun inbetween. I set off to Cadwell at 6am thinking that I was going to be in for another wasted day here. As I have never really been able to drive the track in the dry. I have visited the track a total of 5 times now for the purpose of driving it; once was a track evening where I was too worried to enjoy it properly or even get a proper session in (this was way back in 2019 when I had first gotten my R53), Been rained out once, been snowed on once and had my car blow up on me once.

Arriving at the track I met up with my friend Stu who tracks a very nice NC MX5 with some rather trick suspension bits. I got about unloading the car and helping set up the race tent for the day. Once this was done with the sky looking tempestuous I decided to leave the michi's on and head for sighting laps. It was at this point I employed my skills as a member of Sauber's pit crew and changed over to the MRF's.

The change in tyres proved to be the right call as it stayed dry all day. Had a few sessions out on track and came away wanting more. As I feel I have a lot to learn at Cadwell to get where I want to be at to be happy with my driving there. I really managed to build my confidence throughout the day focusing on coppice. I managed to get to the point where I was only having a minor comfort lift under the bridge before turning in and then managing the car on the throttle all the way around onto park straight. Following on I got to the point where I was able to brake at 50m board at the end of park and before going round charlies and then through goose neck in fourth.

Had a really good battle with another 197 that was on track too for a few laps. and seemed to be able to keep with him for a good 20 miunutes until we had a terrontial downpour that made the track like driving on ice. Had a calm down in the paddock after this as it was only a quick rainstorm and called it lunch.

After lunch I set about again building confidence and speed up again on track only to have a big chunk of it knocked as I ran wide turning into park. I was following Sut and panicked as I was worried I was going to rear end him, the car stepped out but I kept power on and got it back but it ultimatley led me to go grass tracking at 80 plus! Called that a sessions and checked over the car. Thankfully there was no damage.

After this I think I had 2/3 more sessions getting to back where I was in the morning pace wise and confidence wise. The one thing that the concerns me in a way is that I ma not having to brake to go into hall bends. Im entering just over sixty iirc and just lift before going in. What speed are people entering hear at and what gear / speed are people doing over the mountain. The car has a 200 box for reference ratio wise for comparison. As I was bogging down in third but second was too slow.

The main takeaways from the day were this - pull my finger out and get the diff fitted and the car needs more power. I don't know whether it was a mix of the stuff that was there but I got fed up being passed due to power by a few things! I want to go Porsche GT hunting ahah. Maybe driver mod might be needed for that bit though!

So plans for the next day are:
- fit 4-2-1 mani
- fit decat
- get car mapped
- maybe fit diff (I'm really desperate to get this done but want to do it myself and want to be able to get some summer track time!)
- more cadwell seat time
- bigger balls
- tuition

Here are some photos of the day:

This is my fastest lap at cadwell for reference, looks like I was in 2nd up the mountain and I'm pretty similar to you into halls. Despite having been to cadwell three times I still don't feel I've got the hang of it so no idea if that's the way to do it

Just checked some of our footage.

Mountain is around 55mph at the top (2nd gear 197 box), and entry into Halls is 70, which then drops to 60 when you take the first left.

Me and the lads all brake coming into Hall.

Im not sure of my entry speeds, but i wasn't braking into halls until after the right. I'd do the smallest lift to weight transfer into the right hander, and the brake / trail for the left hand. Interesting and a more scary way of doing it but i found that the fastest way

Thanks All.

Makes me feel like I'm on the right track somewhat and not wasting my time!
It takes time to learn tracks properly mate, That was my second time there (one under comp conditions) so i had to push my self to find limits / good lines. So i can give you some help if needs be!

Might be up for that mate! Be good to get a day booked with you and some other forum members once the TA season is over maybe?

Managed to get the footage off my mate go pro from the Blyton trackday in May

I need to invest in a new camera! It’s the first time I’ve ever watched my driving back and it’s interesting to see where you can appear to gain time and adds a new level of interest to trackdays!

Just a brief update before Cadwell on Wednesday next week.

Changed pads over today and given the car a once over to make sure it’s okay.

Not as low as @burrellbloke ‘s recent metal on metal escapades but low enough that they weren’t going to make it through another track day; so definitely a good call in getting them changed.

Going to give the calipers a rebuild over winter as I’m not sure when they were last done and it’ll give me some piece of mind.

I also checked over the crank pulley after a comment was made that it appeared to be perishing, I paint marked it roughly to keep track of it. Rather stupidly I cannot remember the date I marked it but it was definitely a couple of trackdays ago. No movement so all good there.

Really looking forward to Cadwell, as the weather saying we’re going to be in for a dry day. My mates TT has blown up and been replaced by a mk2 clio. So that’s 3 clios and an ST180 going with us. Should be a good time asides from the fez leaving us all for dead down park straight due to have 100 brake on us thanks to the hybrid turbo.

I’ve also started project garage upgrade by buying a proper toolbox. Would anyone be interested in following progress of the garage build if I was upload posts?

Great day in the heat at Cadwell yesterday. Will post a full write up tomorrow when I’ve more time.

BUT …… Would love to say the car performed faultlessly all day but it started throwing a wobbler in the afternoon and I had to be towed off track (happened at 4:15pm and it’s the first time in the clio so that’s good!).

It came up with a check ignition light but the car wasn’t missing and was running fine. Locking the car and unlocking cleared the light and brought it out of limp mode. (Obviously not fixing what was there)

Did code read it and it came up with the below. I’ve recently changed the knock sensor in may so it’s strange if it’s gone again?

Maybe something is wrong with the map? As it’s soemthing I’ve never checked being open and honest with the car and I’m not sure if it’s stock. However the more logical option is that the cars seen very high intake temps and thrown a wobbler. Or the other option is that I fuelled at lunch with Cadwells finest 97 so that’s maybe what the cars not liked?

I drove the car 81 miles home with out issue.

Has anyone come across something like this before on their cars?
