Check your lower arm link bar(s) and Dog bone mounts....Been trying to work out this clunk forever on my car. Could I find it? Anyway recently it got worse. Took to mates ramp, Dog bone mount need replacing, which I guessed cause could feel excessive moved in engine. (Incidentally, I've noticed two screw holes near to the donebone, am I missing a brace there?)

But no obvious play elsewhere. So I took it to an old bloke that I use to use but now retired, and found it straight away. Lower arm links. He commented on how clever the suspension set up was on these. The cars transformed!!!! I was like a big kid, driving round roundabouts 3 times.....cant tell you how much difference its made. Get them checked!!!

the same thing went on mine, renault wolverhampton couldnt find, took it to a specialist and the bloke found it straight away, basically from the way he described it "you could move it around like this" says it was quite obvious
 
"link bars" which ones???

do you mean the small links that go from hub to wishbone ie "anti-rotation links"???
 
I think worn dog bones (which on these don't really look like dog bones) are also the cause of many of the manifold failures.

It's Renault trait. My little mk1 Clio goes through about one a year before turning the rubber into cheese. Cracked a manifold last year :worried:

182s are worse of all for those mounts failing!
 
Ok so for the not so clued up people on the site, where do I find these, what do they look like and what do they cost?

If its a common failure it'd be good for the site for this thread to have some pics and prices for future search results maybe?

few thats me in the clear for a while longer then,the bloke who did my recent MOT used some kind of very vigorous electonic turning plates that shock the car from side to side,good to know to keep an eye on them though,cheers
 
My drivers side link arm has just gone, going in this week to be done, don't have a price yet though.

The only way we could find the noise was to get the car up on a ramp, turn the wheel on full lock & bounce the car. Plus this only worked on the wheel pointing outwards.

All I can tell you is the part is £50+ (depending on where you buy it, it's a dealer only part) and fitting should be no more than £20. So if they want to chage you more than about £80 they are ripping you off.

It's fairly easy to fit, easier if you buy new nuts for it as you can just cut the old one off then. 5 minute job if you cut it, 10-15 if you don't.
 
the part is less than £50 from renault. a specialist near me, who use genuin renault parts charged me £52 all in to replace mine

I got told £50 quid for the part today so this sounds about right.
