Okay, So a few weeks ago i had my exhaust manifold replaced. Took it too a local garage who fitted the new manifold for me. £180 for the labour (And removing a very stubborn locking wheel nut on the rear passenger side)

Before it went in there was no problems

After however I had several warning messages "Check Airbag" "ASR/ESP Desactivated" "Check Steering" and The service light was on.

When i picked up the car, they asked me if these messages were there when i first took it in (They defiantly weren't, its pretty hard to miss 3 warning lights on your dash, especially how prominently obvious they are)

They gave me a phone number for a renault specialist, who had a look and hooked it up to their computers to try and reset the faults. They figured out that the clock spring in the squib had been snapped, and told me it was very likely that they caused this damage. They relayed this information to the garage who originally did the work, and the squib was replaced for me. Fixing the airbag fault.

However - I still have the check steering fault, ASR/ESP fault and service light.

Im taking it back to the renault specialists next week, who are going to get it up on the ramps and find what the fault is exactly. Hopefully find out if this was caused by the garage that fitted the manifold, or if its just a very poorly timed co-incidence. Their initial thoughts before looking at it properly is possibly the steering angle sensor, wheel speed sensor or both.

Has anyone else encountered these problems, or have an insight on what it could be?

this may sound daft but have all the fuse been checked in both fuse boxes?

also have you turned the steering from lock to lock?

Yeah iv done the lock to lock, doesn't do anything... I shall check the fuses in the engine bay when it stops raining.. Surely something so simple would of been picked up on the computer though?

When you say they removed a 'stubborn' locking wheel nut.. How hard did they hit it? Maybe knocked a wheel speed sensor or some such thing?

im guessing what ever they did, it took a good bit of force (Snapped both locking nut keys) and a "locking nut remover" Wasn't budging it. They said they hammerd an old socket onto it, and once it gave it came out fine.

I had a wheel nit removed took some force but did not damage anything, if they removed the sub frame to get manifold out which I believe has to be done maybe they damaged the steering rack or knocked something easily done as it has to be moved to get manifold off

Will have to go to a main dealer mate as the cowboys who have done your job have spun your steering wheel with the column disconnected Which has snapped your clock spring and and put your steering angle sensor out so you will have to have it reset

So a bit of an update as iv had a few enquires about this.

I did finaly end up getting this sorted. After the Airbag problem was fixed by replacing the squib, The renault specialists traced the problem to the steering angle sensor inside the steering column. Replaced the steering column to fix this.

Unsure if this is related...But after a few months of no issues, i had to stand on my brakes, locking them, causing the ASR/ESP Fault came back... Replacing one of the ABS rings, and tidying up some corrosion where the ring sits fixed this.

Yes it's related......I had the same problem with the ASR ABS and it was the ABS ring on one side.....replaced with different one and problem solved
