To starter motor or?

I hardly ever take my clio out, if I do somethings usually wrong with it.

Yesterday I went to drive it and it did nothing when I pressed the Start button. I got a steering not locked message, a 'click' like normal when when you press the button but the engine didn't even try and turn over. I got out and could hear a whining coming from just by where the induction hose goes into the engine.

I tried lots of stuff, did full battery charge, read the forums about turning the wheel, nothing worked. On the forum and everything pointed to a new Starter motor so I phoned up and booked it in for 1.

I go outside today to work out how I will get the car to the garage, gave it a tiny push with my foot hanging out of the door and it rolls a bit on the drive ( 2 meters ). Instead of pulling the handbrake I just dipped the cluth and it bump started effortlessly. Now it's starting everytime like normal.

Do I have the new starter motor or what now?

I had the same problem. I just got a hissing from the engine then either steering not locked error or brake fault. Had a mechanic round who thought it was the starter motor but concluded I wasn't getting any power to the abs system (or so his diagnoatic test thing said). He left and couldn't fix the car, only told me there was more stuff wrong with it.
I tried to fire it up later in the day and she was fine as has been so since.
I hope it's just a one off for you

sounds like it could be on the way out or as in some cases a build up of carbon on the starter solenoid contacts which can "insulate" the the contact surface and stop power flow....

thats why sometimes a smack with a hammer makes them work!!!!!

give it a few days and see how it goes it might not do it again - but if it does i would change it!

Surely if it was starter motor, you wouldnt get a steerin not locked message on the dash. Ive had this a few times, same message, turned sometime the steering locks in a stiff position, you have to give it a hard pull when pressing the button.

Tdc sensor on gearbox.

also mystarter was deemed knackered by Renault they were looking big money to fix it so I decided to do it myself. Got the starter motor out and found that a wire was broke, so took it to a local company that specialise in starters etc and they repaired the wire and tested the starter cost me a tenner! No probs with it since. But without a lift or pit it would be a nightmare job, only took me ten mins to get the starter out and another ten to get it back in!

Just got in the car to take the Mrs out for dinner and I got this exact thing!

Start motor has shown no signs of hesitation before, so is it likely to be the motor? If the tdc sensor is the green one on top of the box, I changed that last year anyway.

Is it easily changed by yourself if you can jack the car up?

a tdc sensor DOES NOT STOP THE STARTER FROM WORKING! it only stops the engine from actually running...

tdc sensor isn't green! its lower down and black...

the starter turns the engine over - this action (flywheel with excitor ring on passing the sensor) results in the tdc sensor sending a signal to the ecu so it knows where no1 cylinder is - this information along with the cam position sensor allows the ecu to time and fuel the engine correctly so it starts...

if the starter doesn't work its either a battery issue or connection or the starter its self

to check the starter you need to make sure the trigger voltage down to the starter solenoid is there when in the start demand/position

I have full electrics and power so I'll see if I can check the connections. The only thing I've touched is the panel filter, I haven't driven it in a week so I'm a bit confoooozed.

We had an issue with our R27 Pete everything worked appart from the car starting it would turn over but wouldnt start is this the same issue if it is the Boys at TDF came to my hose and changed the Crank sensor once changed car was fine ?

Mine won't even turn over mate, I just get *click* and that's it.

I'll try the steering wheel thing Ryan. See how it goes.

when it will just click - see if you can get to give the starter a firm smack and see if that makes it start...if it does its 99% starter faulty
