Steve's rs200 progress thread

Hi guys and thanks for all the welcomes in my other post.

I thought I would start up a new thread as I have a few changes lined up for the Clio over the next few weeks.

First off here is a couple of pictures as she stands now. White with anthracite pack, cup chassis, and Recaros : ( sorry for the iphone pics )

The right spec and mileage car came up so although the anthracite pack was not on my want list it gave me a couple of ides what to do with it in the future as its not expensive to have sparayed ( i do alot of work with a body shop next door so will get a decent price ) This is why although I had the chance to take a set of black speedlines I decided to keep the orional wheels. More on this later as its booked into the body shop tomorrow.

First step was Bluetooth as the car did not come with it from the factory. I was going to look into just having a standard push button parrot installed but after hearing the standard stereo I realised that this would need to be changed as well. So I killed two birds with one stone. Originally I was looking at Alpine but then saw this :

Parrot Asteroid.

With the right connecters this was very quick and easy to install. Hands free is crystal clear with voice activated dialling which works with ease.

Music is through anything you wish to plug as it has connectors for USB, line in, iphone/ipod or stream over blue tooth connection. Quality of sound is a massive improvement over the standard. I have looked into steering controls but I am not sure if its worth the extra money yet, so I will wait a couple of weeks and see how I get on with it. You can search for music by voice as well so this makes it much easier than scrolling through the menu.

It uses my iphone as a tethering device so you can use all the apps such as goggle maps, speed and accident location, live internet radio. All of these are a good addition but I think in reality only the internet radio will get used for pod casts etc.

Fit in the car I am really pleased with and looks great in the flesh.

Next up was replacement speakers as one has blown. For now I have gone for the direct Phillips replacements route. I have pulled the cover off the existing tweeter to find that there is no speaker but the cables are there so these will be fitted tonight. There seems to be a mixed reaction on there quality so I will just see how it goes. For £80 front and rear its not a massive gamble. Rears have arrived and fronts are due this afternoon.

More to follow tomorrow and over the next few days as I have a little pile of bits gathering in my office !

Next update hopefully will be the body shop work and then the suspension and spacers when they arrive from Germany this week.

Cheers

Same speakers as me...massive upgrade!

How's the parrot?

Parrot is great mate, so simple and great sound. Voice control is spot on.

Installed the speakers tonight with the use of a head torch ! It literally took ten minutes as they are just plug and play. The new tweeter is slightly bigger than the dumby one but will push down with a little force.

Here is a picture of the built in crossovers which keeps it simple.

Rears need two lugs bent back but again easy as they are just thin metal. I did notice that there is enough room on both sets to get a MDF ring in to help support hr speaker which will be much better for sound, so this will be done at a later date.

So much better having separate high range in the front. Not turned it up as my car is on the drive and both kids asleep but the clarity difference is massive. Will see how it is in the morning when I turn it up a bit.

I find my rears distort still. I need to fix that, annoys the hell out of me.

The rears were so cheap I am not expecting much. These are standard 13cm speakers so better ones will fit as you dont need slimline ones, and there is loads of room behing the panel which makes it a flimsy mount.

It should be easy to make a MDF ring to hold them in place which should make a big improvement. I will do this soon so will let you know if there is much difference in sound and if its worth doing.

Not sure what the adapter rings are for but the MDF will just give a better depth of sound due to less vibration in the mount. Will look to see if anyone makes a specific mount but I'm sure it will be a custom job.

Little update this afternoon.

First i had chance to test the speakers better this morning and I have mixed feelings at the moment.

Fronts are really good, and as I said before that having high range in the front dash makes a massive difference to the sound. The rears though are not a lot better than standard.

I was not expecting too much as these were very cheep but I think its more to do with the housing than the speakers as there is no support to give any real bass for depth of sound. So I will look into this more a bit later. Maybe with a under seat sub or just building a better housing for the rears.

Car went in this morning to have some of the anthracite removed ( Don't mind the rear but never been a fan of the grey front ) so here is just a couple of progrees pictures with some parts removed.

Hopefully I will have some completed ones tonight if I get it back before dark.

whats the sizes for the front and rear speakers? do you need a amp for them to run 100% ?

They are 13cm. I think a amp would help the power slightly but it wont help with the fact that there is not a lot of bass i dont think. Been searching on here and i cant see if anyone has built any rear mounts.

Front are these ones :

I will post some pictures tomorrow when it's light but happy with the results. I had the option to take a set of speed lines when I bought the car but decided at the time to get the cup alloys powder coated.

That was until today when I parked next to another white one where I live with speed lines on it ! :tongue_smilie:

I can't put my finger on it but in my head they looked better and having the cups painted would not quite cut it for me.

So it's starting to look like I am creating a car that I could have just bought from a dealer ....lol.

Anyone want to buy some cheap cup wheels ?

Have you replaced the front anthracite panel with a black one.. I could be interested in buying the anthracite one off you if you still have it?
