Jack at Royal is known to religiously go over the old wheels with whatever new material you've chosen. So the new wheels are "always" a bit thicker.

That's what puts me off getting my standard wheel re-done, it's just lazy imo. Sabelt wheel for me I think.

The wheels feel lovely a little bigger. And he often gets it in his blurb as a 'plus point'.

But now I know this - I agree that it's a half arsed way of going about it.

For £135 fitted I can honestly say my steering wheel is a bargain from Jack. I like to hold something "chunky":flushed: so not bothered what's underneath.
Each to their own though

I haven't felt or seen the sabelt wheel in person, I bet it is nice. I do quite like the chunkier feel and slightly padded feel of the new re-trimmed wheel but all I've got to compare it to is a tired, peeling standard wheel so it's going to feel great compared to that. Happy with price and overall finish although if I'm super fussy the stitching is uneven and I wouldn't mind hiding the bit at the bottom where the RenaultSport bit goes but if it won't fit I'll just leave it. First choice would be a brand new oem wheel but I couldn't find one anywhere!

Some really good stuff here mate, every little touch is coming together nicely.

Makes me realise I need to throw some money at my car and get it back to its former glory! Out of interest where did you get the plates made up ? They look really good.

Keep the updates coming!

Thanks mate. The plates were just off eBay, Autostyle I think was the company. Reflective, correct font and spacing, fully legal and look good.

Really good upgrades.
I'm looking at having my wheel done by royal very soon as mines getting a little worn now.
How do you find the gear knob? Slightly heavier? Better feel on gear shifts?
Been considering one for mine too.

The gear knob was on the car when I got it, yes it does feel much heavier and I do like it. I didn't realise how heavy it was til I took it off to fit the gaiter!

Have a look at the 3D gel plates on eBay, I have these as an alternative to the pressed plates.

Your car is coming along nicely Shane. I would still try fitting the insert on the bottom of the steering wheel though. Brave man lying under a car on a trolley jack!

Haha no it did have axle stands too but just left the jack by the jacking point as it wasn't in the way! I've seen photos with the trim in place and it does look better in my opinion. I think I'll get one anyway and try it

You just need to be careful that whilst trying to fit the badge over your new 'fatter' steering wheel; the ribs on the back of the badge don't mark up the wheel in the process

The badge is designed to work around and close over a certain thickness of wheel (ie: Factory standard). The 'issue' being that if you try; and then mark your new wheel.......Realise the badge wont go on to your satisfaction: you'll be stuck looking at a marked wheel. (Depends how picky you are i guess).

For reference - there was no way on Earth the standard badge would have fitted nicely on mine IMO. Not and look decent / close up together properly. My garage had a good go when they fitted the wheel - got so far and thankfully stopped before the marks he was putting in the leather became irreversible. We looked at modifying / chopping the badge around various ways - but decided it would be a tidier looking job to leave off altogether. Which in retrospect i like more without.

Not trying to be a scaremonger or push you either way. Just relating my experience. And ill fully admit i'm anal and was petrified by marking the wheel and wouldn't have ended up happy unless the badge sat as good as or better than it left the factory.

GOOD LUCK whatever way you go  And let us know too !

Thanks mate, appreciate the heads up. To be honest it really doesn't look bad without it and I would be absolutely gutted if I marked or damaged the wheel

Jack fitted my wheel and then popped on the renaultsport insert in less than a minute. Looks and fits great.

*** just to add to the confusion:grinning:

HA HA HA - mine was a struggle to get on even 2/3rd's of the way on; and even if you could / did it would never had joined at the sides (Left and right) and would have left a gap between the two halves.

My steering wheel insert didn't fit at all when I had my wheel done, so I filed down the ribs which gave me enough clearance to get the trim on.
