LY200 - too loud or blow up again, taking bets!

Engines as good as ****ed...

stone cold compression; 170,170,150,170.
put some oil down the plug hole of the 150....result 235psi.

Time to strip it down and sell off the bits mentioned. Project Clio 200R is almost officially started!! :cloud9:

Haha you're crazy! Gonna be an epic build though! Put my name down for the gearbox and flywheel please Rich!

Yep, paving the way again it seems!

Paul I'll give you first refusals on the box and fly
Chris you can always bring you car down and we'll do 2 at once, split the bills of course

So Tech1 are happy to take on the work and as always I have full confidence in Pauls exacting standards.
I also spoke to Specialist Components about my ECU and the loom changes - I think the wiring will be a lot harder than I first envisaged...I don't think I'll let it stop me though! I need to ring back next week when they've had a think but they've built K20 looms and of course the mk3 Clio was done on my car, so once the pinouts have been compared should be in a better position.

**** I need 250bhp (maybe more!) and 9000rpm!!!!

Sorry to hear the bad news, but then again it gives you the perfect excuse to build an epic vehicle! Silver linings and all. I'm sure you said a clio with a K20 would be the best of both worlds. The S2000 engine (F20c)would be wonderful but unless you are planning a rwd Clio I can't see it happening, I would however be ecstatic to hear otherwise!

i'd like to nominate this thread for most entertaining thread of the forum. insane and epic at the same time.

I'd like to nominate it's OP for some kind of Darwin/Bellendery award :lol2: and let it be an object lesson to others.........buy the M3 LMAO!

Wow this sucks mate! I totally understand the route you're going down now though, k20's are awesome engines!
if you want to take it a bit further you could build a k24 too

if you shop around you can get an engine, incl box, loom etc for alot less than what you've stated. But it's good to factor in more as you'll know

interested in your cyl head if you decide to sell!

One step at a time, but yes an option! Though I would want to enjoy a 'square' engine capable of doing 9000rpm first. Not sure what the K24 is like for revs, it's a long stroke around 100mm I think? So must be similar rod angles to the F4R :\

All the engines for around £800 are EP3 K20A2 which have done a million miles from what I can see. For a K20Z4 with DBW from an FN2, all more expensive. The chassis has done 40k miles, so I want an engine with 40k or less really.

Cool, I'll price stuff up properly soon enough and send you the first message regards the head

Hats off to you tbh. I respect that where others just talk about it, you've put your money where your mouth is. That said I wouldn't go down the Honda route. At least the Clio had a template to follow in the R3 but the Honda, there are sooo many pitfalls to this conversion it's untrue. The amount of custom parts is going to be crazy and the electrics even more so. Even then you don't know the outcome is going to be what you'd expect. These type of conversions don't always translate on the road how you'd expect.

Put it back to standard mate and buy an M3 V8 which is what you always really wanted in the first place

Shall I put you a special segment on the homepage to merit this achievement. Haha

correct, it isn't a square engine but they do have longer rods to compensate, the americans all go k24 on n/a setups and i've seen figures around the 300 mark. They still rev using a k20 pump as the k24 has an oil pump with balance shafts, so they need to go.

read up on it mate, if you do think that's the way forward i have some manley rods spare

Well I guess if you can do it with a basic K24 bottom end using a traditional cast or hypereutectic cast piston then never say never  But I'm not going to factor it now at all. Possibly might drop the cams and springs off the day 1 list at around £1500. Just watched a skunk2 video showing a K20 cam swap in 15mins!

My prime goal would be to get it all running first, upgrade from then on

There are various versions amongst the k24's, of which one has 11:1 compression out of the box

Yeah gotta walk before I run!

K20 Clio...M3....K20 Clio....M3, tough call but I've always been a fan of the underdog! Trouble is the only M3's I want are all 30k, otherwise it's too old, too high mileage, boring ass Silverstone II and Black leather etc. Not to mention the fact the M3 needs 2.5k on track worthy brakes, and unless you can grab a comp pack car (more like 35k), then it's also 2.5k on Ohlins R&T.

I have a hunch a K20 Clio will work out pretty decent
I've spent so much on it and I've done 2 bloody track days! :worried: and both of which I couldn't go entirely full bore because I had noise issues on each! If I put it back to standard which would involve finding a low mileage engine (and I've just sold one annoyingly!) then it has all been in vain!

I'll get a tape measure over the bay tomorrow anyway, if it looks like they'll be a chassis leg issue that would be a show stopper so then yes I will go M3.

If it costs me £1500 to get another engine installed, I almost think I might be better to spend the £1500 on putting new rings on the engine and selling it forged with a clean bill of health.

drop pistons out....hone bores and re-ring it

Rich may I ask, what did originally cause the damage mate?
I think the bores have worn from a year's use of cold starts. You gap rings on forged pistons bigger due to them expanding more and a few people I've spoken to recently say they would never use forged pistons on a daily. Basically a year's use of cold start piston slap has worn them. Now what's caused the 'failure' if you like is I think a failed injector has bore washed it, however with bores that were tired and probably not sporting the best honing due to the daily use...then that's why it's happened quickly!
Tbh I'm not convinced it can have been built as well as it could have.
