Jason's R27 Team F1 Racing Blue

Update.
They have had the head apart and the valves have touched (all) they are doing a leak test overnight to see how many are bent. If it's all 8 (I'm assuming 8 of the 16 is the max number that could collide at one time) then the cost to rework the head and replace the valves, belts and pump etc is £1500 plus VAT.
Interesting though and food for thought, they reckon the cam belt is the original, in their professional opinion which puts me in a situation as it was sold to me as "belts done", it even states it in the service book.

First thing to do is get it in writing. Second thing is contact the place you bought it and threaten legal action unless they pay for the damage.

All in all a sorry state of affairs. Lets hope that first and foremost you come out of this ok Jason.

So had the cambelt snapped, jumped a number of teeth or ??

***Not sure quite how anyone would realistically be able to prove it was the original belt.......

Shame you've had problems. But I wouldn't want the engine repairing tbh, I'd be wanting the whole engine replaced, could be damage to pistons, wrist pins, rods etc also the valve guides will need to be replaced as well as seats recut. Easier to fit a second hand engine

Rubbish news that Jason, sorry to hear. Think the best thing here is to bide a bit of time and consider your options, it's easy for them garages to want the work and try and manipulate it for you to let them do it.

Thing is fitting this would still cost me the same money and there is no guarantee that the components are not shot, I'd still need to fit a new belt kit and pump etc, I might as well stick to what I've got at least I know it's condition?

But do you really know yours: seeing as where you are at the present point and what thoughts your garage have come up with re the belts....

It's possible (Ive not read the other engine owners progress thread etc) that the lump for sale may have more of a documented and proven history than yours ?

Yea I agree the engine change is a pain - but so is doing all the head and associated works ! Not to mention waiting for parts possibly.

And the belt change etc would at least be far easier and cheaper on a bare engine on the bench - as opposed to one fitted in the car you've got to fight to get to.

I'm far-far from trying to make your decision complicated or sway you.....just chucking some thoughts into the mix

In saying that - if it were me....I'm not sure what I'd do right now either !!!
Likely in the short term: sit back and think over the weekend as Chris said.

I think going forward I'd like to be hearing other engine 'specialists' thoughts and experiences as per Stephenvenning above to know if the belt failure could or is likely to have caused other unseen damage that will rear its head later-on.

That might well sway your decision.

Good luck Jason.

Saturday update.
The garage is 100% sure that the original belt was on there. He's seen a million belts of all different ages and mine was perished and breaking up, all the printed writing worn off. This is not the condition of a belt supposedly changed at 66k miles less than 2 years ago, he's sure of that and he has no reason to lie about it.
Moral of the story, if you buy a 2nd hand 197, get the belts changed straight away, you can't trust many people especially strangers.

What a shambles Jason..... Horrid state of affairs. And little more you as a buyer could have done.

I'm sure your man at the garage has seen it all - but how do you actually prove that either the previous seller has lied or point the finger of blame (With regard to making a claim) at the garage with the stamp in the service book....?

I had my belts etc done a month or so ago @ just prior to 6 years of age and at 35'000 miles. I have to say the belt that came off was in extremely good condition. When i turned it inside out, flexed it near the base of the teeth - i could see no signs at all of perishing or cracking. Perhaps a clue to yours being original as you say......

I'm sorry to hear the news Jason, it sounds like rotten luck. I really hope you're doing ok through all this and you will be able to get things sorted. The damage to the engine - and subsequent repair work - is bad enough, but to have to go through the hassle of a small claims procedure just adds to it all!

It is quite scary to think that even if we have the paperwork saying that work has been done, there is no actual guarantee that it has.... Perhaps a one-off case, but it does get you thinking...

Best of luck through it all Jason, I really do hope you'll be alright.

The first thing i did when buying mine was phone k tec to query the cam/aux belt change . Sad as it is you just can't trust anyone these days .

Well this is uncharted territory and I must admit, makes me tired just thinking of this total mess, especially if funds are tight.
Good luck Jason, and remember - we're all here to talk sense when you start going mad!

You would be able to tell from the water pump, this has data od manufacture on it. If it's like 2006 then I doubt the cambelt has been changed. You could also tell from if the depahser has been changed as this should be done with the cambelt change

Great shout that Steven, never change a cambelt without a water pump so this would really be a good case for you.

Best of luck Jason, keep us updated!
