What happened? :s

One of the fingers on the pressure plate decided it didn't want to be part of the pressure plate anymore. Whizzed around inside the housing and what the photo doesn't show is that as well as those huge gouges it also put three holes in the housing all around half an inch in length and around 1mm thick. Very strange because the clutch action felt fine, albeit the biting point was a little higher but there was absolutely no slipping or crunching. Unbelievable really, the only sign there was a problem was an oil leak...

I'll have to get some more photos next time I'm there.

Well iam now in the club of crunching 4th gear woop woop not!mine is a 2008 clio cup 197 with 42567miles on the clock obviously out off warranty :worried: so i'am a volkswagen tech and have check oil and found metal bits so what would be my next step do i need to book it into renault and get them to do the same check i have to say the same or phone RUK now and explain what i have done and confirmed its a new box needed? I'am kinda annoyed as i have just payed out for a fuel pump and rear brakes which most off u may know are not cheap and now my gearbox is faulty i love the car but getting a little annoyed with it now!Any advise would be so appreciated!!

Ok quick update

Car now been in for diagnostic check = £50 for someone in Arnold clark to it drive it for 2 mins to changing into 4th...

Positive gearbox failure

I stuck to my guns but all i could get was 60% contribution.. still a £1200 bill for me.... for something that is a fundamental design fault by renault

All i can say is .......i wont be buying a renault again...... as much as i love the car...... they clearly haven't spent enough developing this, and therefor expect the enthusiast to turn a blind eye... such a shame as its one of the best hot hatches ever made ........ when it works...

I will be putting this awesome car up for sale once the gearbox ( at great cost to myself ) is replaced as i have no confidence in the brand now or the car for that matter as the faulty gearbox will be replace by a new faulty gearbox... as Renault need to do a recall to justify a fix......(1 in 4 doesn't meet the failure criteria apparently ....think it must be 1:1 before that happens).....

The way i look at it is that it as now a financial time bomb on wheels.......

Thank you renault........i should have stuck with BMW....

Achtung!!

£1200 is 60% of the bill? I'd be going to another dealers, £2000 to change a gearbox is beyond extortionate. I'd expect the whole bill to be close to £1200 not 60% of it.

I'd also be posting this on the renaultsport forums as they are actually staffed by RUK people, they might take an interest.

Make a couple of phone calls to other dealers, call RUK and ask them if you can carry the work elsewhere (specialist), as GrumpyTwig said go to renaultsport forum and start posting, I haven't got a personal experience (touch wood) with RUK but from what I've read they are pretty good when it comes to that. Have you spoken to them or was it the dealer who told you 60% contribution?

And can you please clarify the numbers? Did you mean 60% contribution from RUK but you still have to pay £1200? So their original quote was £3k???? Or did you mean 60% contribution from you, so £2k for the job? Either way this is too much.

If you decide to sell don't even bother paying £1200. Have a look here;

£380 posted, 12 months warranty, get a specialist to do the fitting and you are on to a win:smile:

Or here

£250 posted, 3 months warranty.

Loads of gearboxes around mate, depends what you want to do really.

i need my vote changing from not to yes.

BTW i was quoted £1200 for a new box.

awaiting RUK getting back to me.

If i was going to be shafted and wanted to get shot i would simply flush the box out as much as possible to remove the metal bits from it and go PX asap. Not that i'm advocating that of course but if its only just showing signs then i'm guessing it will mask it enough.

swapped the votes over :thumbup1:

Does anyone know if Renault ever upgraded the synchros in these dodgy 'boxes ?

If so, what was changed and when was the change implemented ?

Unofficially yes they have changed them but not sure when or if they ever admitted it.

regardless they are allowed to without admitting any faults under improvement programs.

Looks like mine has gone the same way. 59 plate 27k miles, February 4th was its 3 years so just out of warranty , got it in January and has a 6 month warranty with the dealer but a £400 excess to claim. It's crunching from 3rd to 4th and sometimes 1st to 2nd. When I bought it in January the salesman said something about it having second gear replaced not long ago under warranty but didn't explain and I didn't know much about this fault then. Would whatever they have done have a 12 month warranty? Is it worth me popping into renault dealer tomorrow or just call RUK? I guess they would have a record of warranty work carried out in the past?

Renault don't replace parts, they would have changed the whole box.

Perhaps the dealer had the box referbed? they may have tools to do so but most don't.

Not sure what he was one bout then, was just a car dealer near Basingstoke. If they did have something they did a crappy job. Will see what I can find out.

I've now got the car back from the garage. Total bill excluding RUK 60% was just over £2800

That included new Gearbox , Clutch & Clutch Master Cylinder. Also included nearly £800 of labour...

Decided that i will keep the car for the time-being.....as i honestly don't know what i would replace it with as it ticks all the boxes.

The gearbox its self on the bill is £1200 exc vat... its warranted for a year so ill see how it goes.......

Now that is back I've got a smile on my face..... was driving around in a 1.4 astra hire car so now have a new frame of reference of how good this car is.

Owning this car reminds me of my old lotus elise s1 that i had a few years back.... its an emotional roller coster.

I have been to Renault about mine and have been quoted £2021.38 to have my gearbox replaced I almost fell off the seat when the receptionist told me!!so I have had the RUK phone call today they said that iam not a loyal customer although all my cars have been bought from Renault and I have a 197 and a 172 now. They also said my cars millage is half the expectance life for a gearbox so on these bit off info iam only getting a 50% contribution so I will have to pay £1010.69. so to my knowledge now are gearboxes only suppose to last for 100k or so then suppose to be changed which makes them now a serviceable item dose this sound rite to any off you? sounds wrong to me!!!

theres a company selling ex-renault stock items so in effect the boxes are "new"...

Think this is the route I will be going down buying one off these then fitting myself cheaper than Renault even with a contribution. do u know off anything I could do to prevent this happening again? one off the lads at my work mentioned shock proof gear oil he has it in his 900bhp skyline not Shure how this would be with a little Clio box haven't heard much about it either.
