Dreaded timing belt

Hi every one,

I have been looking around for full timing belt kit and I have noticed that many people are saying gates make the kit for Renault can any one back this up?

Also does any one know how many hours it actually takes to do one as I have been told it is a lot easier to drop the engine out and do it that way. And Renault say it will take 6 hours but I can't imagine that can be done in that time.

Also what's a rough price for kit and fitting I am expecting it to be around 500. So please let me know how far I am away from it.

Any help would be great

Thanks

Lewis

It's not an engine out job

Find a local specialist with the correct timing tools

ALS do a decent price on a full kit of bits including water pump - they will fit also

Where are you located ?

I had mine done a Ren-Tech in Llandudno, worth the drive over there, £340 for cam belt, auxiliary belt and coolant change...

^ All genuine Renault parts. They also offer a fitting service if your near by and are based just outside of Carlsile. I drove 2+ hours to go up and get it done there. Think I paid about £450 iirc fully fitted. Had quotes from quite a a few 'specialists' but these were by far the best value even with the 4 hour round trip! I won't name and shame but one wanted £720! So defiantly worth shopping around.

Unfortunately that's the going rate down here. Although that did include the dephaser pulley too

The £720 price was actually from somewhere up near me in Lancashire! From a well known specialist as well, I was quite shocked at the price difference. I got the full kit inc the pulley fitted at ALS for the £450 mark. No reason it should cost more unless they're charging like £80-£100 an hour labour which I guess isn't uncommon down south.

I am located in Durham so Carlisle isnt to far away, as for parts I am able to get them as I work in motor factors and I can get gates kits so that isn't too bad.

ALS sound like a good option, Chris had his kit from there and Mark Black at Midland Renault (near Worksop) fitted it

Might be worth getting an all in price from ALS including parts and then if there's any issues its all be supplied and fitted by them.

There's DTM cars in Newcastle also, he's done the belts on mine and a few other bits. Not sure exactly what he'll charge but it'll be reasonable and it'll be done right.
