Think the new car is single turbo wheras the M is twin.
Same thing happened on 135i and 335i in about 2008/9 dropped to single turbo with better emission & economy but I dont think they are as tunable as the twin.
Twin Turbo changed to Twin Power (single turbo)
The M cars with have bigger brakes & LSD as standard. When you see tuned 135 & 335's they often have a LSD fitted as all that power throgh the tail can be troublesome.
