As would be good option for me and as for Disabling the Airbag computer - think I'll pull all the fuses while working on steering wheel and then if the main ECU throws up a fault for airbag failure I can reset via my ECU tools.

Has anyone on here had experience of removing the wheel as I've found some info but wanted to see if a puller is required to get wheel off of column

Here is something I wrote a while back;

I was getting sick of my nasty wheel, so I decided to swap it with the standard Clio rubber wheel, so I could get the original retrimmed. Thanks to Ryan197 for his info.

Disconnect negative terminal of battery (I actually just disconnnected the two wires going to the negative, rather than disconnecting the bracket)
Wait 20min or so
2 x torx under the steering column, then tug down and remove, carefully, lots of wiggling necessary.
Using a large flat screw driver, poke into the bottom hole of the wheel, and lift the metal retaining bar, while pulling sharply on the airbag
Disconnect the plugs to each side, and the rear of the airbag, the side ones have a retaining clip which needs releasing before they can be disconnected. There is also an earth to the back of the airbag.
Disconnect the CC buttons (small black plug on the right) and horn (larger grey plug on the left).
Undo retaining bolt using T50 Torx
Remove wheel, guiding wires through the top hole.

Refitting is the reverse

You can make a hole in the bottom of the wheel to get to the clip, but personally I would just go in through the big hole that is already there.

Workshop manual would just refer to steering wheel removal/refit as just that, didn't have no Id number e.g. steering wheel airbag removal 88c - but just managed to find it, but your guide so much better as the manual makes a real meal of doing this & has more warnings than actual info, would be good if they'd stuck it all in one place

It is pretty fiddly to get the airbag loop off the hook, but you might even do it first time. Reassembly is a pop, just pushes back on.

With the loop bit are you referring to sticking what manual states as an 8mm dia. rod up into the underside/back of steering wheel to release the airbag unit?

Did see someone say they drilled a new hole, but manual showed a hole but no mention of drilling, that's confusing bit

In my third picture you can see two holes in the back of the wheel, the lower one has a hook at the bottom. The airbag has a loop that is secured on that hook. You can make a hole in the bottom of the wheel to push the loop off, or you can do what I did and just go in through the large hole.

Now understand, thought the loop was hooked at top but it's at the bottom

There are two, but you can't get to the top one so you unhook the bottom first and as you pull the bottom forward the top will come off.

Update: Hayley Ward phoned today and accepted that it needed to be replaced, offered to pay 50% towards the 460 I have been quoted. My reply was it was still too much to pay for something which they have admitted is a problem, she is going to contact my local Renault garage to negotiate on the price of the wheel and fitting and ring back tomorrow.

The fight continues.

135 off of Karl, that included a steering wheel trim, sold both of those for 50, so that's 85quid, local renault specialist charged me 15quid labour, so all in cost 100. Can't believe some of the quotes people are getting.

Good luck, sounds like your getting somewhere with them and from what you've mentioned the dealers seem to have a fair amount input on agreeing to do it at what price rather than just RUK.

Now I've got info on wheel removal, I'll be getting mine re-trimmed as something that worried me was even after paying out for another wheel it may do the same thing again and as I plan to keep the car for a fair few years now would be a better investment for me

I don't know why they think the problem is rare - it's been happening on Renaults since the Clio MK2 as far as I know. Surely Renault dealers must see it selling hundreds and thousands of the things...I think it's called burying their heads....

They don't care as the wheel in most cases probably lasts 3 years or 60k so out of warranty and not their problem. Although all the people now complaining might make them think - but doubt it compared to the number of cars they sell and don't get compaints about.
