Why do the R.S cars loose money so quickly: your thoughts

Just thought I'd start a thread as to why people 'think' or rather 'know'
Why the Renaultsport cars loose so much money, and so quickly?

They're regarded as the best handling hot hatch, good looking; and that goes for every model from as far as the williams, and the options that are available on them.

You can pick a 2007 197 up for as little as 4.5K
Where as the equivalent mileage 2007 corsa Vxr
Is 7-8K.

You can already pick a 200 up for just under 9K!

The reliability can't be questioned between them, as the vxr's m32 gearbox is highly known for failing.

Even comparing to a Civic type R, they're 2003-2004 with higher mileage for the price of a 197 for example.

Is it the tuning potential?

Just interested as to what people think.

Depreciating asset.!.!.....still some good Clios hold their value. It's not all doom and gloom  ha.

Take clio 182 trophy...still pricey ish...

I reckon there's a point for tuning potential....and that maybe models are released too quickly.

Good low mileage clio, which is mint, necessary service done, such as the belts and the like...they CAN sometimes hold their value.

Just my opinion, and my experience

if you think our cars lose money bud, look at what the chavvy vauxhall vxr's are worth in comparison and still dropping like a stone, there's just no money in cars anymore so its one of those things you've got to take on the chin

because people would rather have a mini or a bmw or an audi or a vw :coffee:

you know different badge but all the same underneath :foxspeed:

It's irritating isn't it, but yes, fuel & tax off the top of my head.

I lost £6k on my 197 in just 2 1/2 years.

But hey, you can pick up an 05 plate Fiesta ST for £2k now lol

As said Fuel and tax costs plus a general decline in the values of used cars.

I think also the general perception that German is best and French is crap is so ingrained into the motoring public that we have no chance

TBF ive basically had all french cars bar the E36 328 which is bullet proof anyways and ive never ever had a problem bar one which was on my 16v 106 Rallye and the throttle cable snapped. Thats it.

I feel the reason is that this day and age with petrol prices and insurance (group 17!!!! FCKING REDONKULOUS) it has killed the car. Make that cheaper and the prices would soon rise again or atleast plateau on 10ish k for the next few years

All cars lose money unless you have a rare classic specialist sports car. A year old 991 model 911 Carrera S for example can be had now on the used market for 75k (nearly 100k) once specced. It's best to swallow hard and just enjoy them for the fun they provide us  If I counted how much I'd lost over the past 20 years I'd cry.

Compare cars to furniture (I'm not going mad!). If you buy an expensive sofa new and then come to sell in a years time lets say, you'd have to practically pay someone to take it away!

As someone said, the arse has fallen out of the used car market. Finance/leasing on new cars is what dealers want you to have. Even German cars suffer heavy depreciation, they are just more popular as used cars for the "perceived" quality and badge snobbery.

My 2p!
Cheers

They lose money because not many people want to buy them. It's what drives the market really. Actually some people don't even recognise them, people even asking ''what car is that''?

Now why people do not want to buy them? Well, that has been very thoroughly explained in the above posts. Maybe deep down that's why I don't blame renault for this new RS. They want the new model to appeal to more people, to expand their business, make more profit etc...at the end of the day, it's all business right?

I can see what you mean but still, it'll be 200 bhp, Sport down the side and have a turbo. If anything i'll bet it'll be probs more on insurance premiums and also probs more on tax!

Guys are crying about the same thing all over the place. Over on the TT forum people are selling their 42k TT RS for 27k after 18-24 months. That's almost a whole Clio right there.

Cars in general are just a fortune to buy and you lose a fortune when selling onwards!

I think the Clios issue is the Tax/Fuel costs/Insurance etc as already said. Build quality ain't the best either i think my old mk2 was better build than my 197 was..
