Where's the cost go doing the meg conversion

I agree, I never wanted to compromise on reliability. It's not my daily but I still didn't want a hack job.
My build just changed over time and 99% of the time it was because of someone else mess up which is why the cost went out of control.
It was always always going to be rebuilt because I couldn't find a car cheap enough with low mileage. I wanted the whole car just because it was more convenient. Then trying to rely on people to supply the correct parts, parts going missing, certain people being so difficult to deal with, garages closing down and my car being collected and doing the rounds around the south of England, it has been emotional from start to nearly finish.
After my own experience and anyone asking about doing the conversion, my answer is, just don't lol.

My 197 has now done 95000 miles anyway so the megane engine has lower miles. It's not my daily either so it's only three thousand miles a year hence why I'm not going over board. To be honest I'm not doing it to go balls out I'm doing it because the lack of low end torque is quite frustrating. I'm no boy racer but watching lesser cars overtake me until I hit five thousand revs is a little annoying.lol.
I will be happy with 250 horses and some low end grunt !

That's decent power anyway. There are times when it becomes completely pointless having a boat load of power that you can't use, like everyday on public roads. It's nice to have it but whats the point. At best, its a sprint to 70mph. I've been caught speeding already so I have the fear.

I'd be exactly the same. Why would i 'swap' my 36k Clio lump for a 90k Meg lump and possibly risk reliability in the process ?

If it were me id be buying a documented, low-mileage lump with a good service history as a start-point. Even if that meant it took me longer to do / be able to afford the conversion in full. I wouldn't compromise a really good build for the sake of a few months 'savings' if thats what waiting slightly longer meant. Maybe partly because mine is solely a road car. That i rely on for work...

And i know others @Gordini have the same mentality when they've talked about a possible conversion.

Whilst i can't vouch for the engines, LSD's, Gearbox's etc that K-Tec uses, its easy to see how a huge variance in prices of the Meg conversion can occur when there are so many options as to the initial engine / gearbox spec, the whole gearbox / LSD issue / engine management, other hard-parts, go-faster bits, ''look-good' / bling additions etc etc

Not to mention some people hand the whole thing over to someone else to tackle. Some buy their own hardware and let a specialist do the dirty-work. And some do the whole mechanical bit - only really paying someone else to do the mapping.

There are many ways to skin a cat i think is the ultimate answer. And with that comes a huge range of price differences !
You make some excellent points Shuv. Ktec made me feel I was a bit bonkers not wanting to put a 70-80k engine into my 15k car. They said it would easily last to 100-120k  - I expected a fresh engine for the money they're charging. When you start wanting big performance the numbers get silly - £4k for their 450 turbo on its own! Ktec still haven't got back to me with final figures but they were intimating a 450bhp conversion would cost about the same as an R26R!!

I'm still looking for a low mileage engine to build a c. 300bhp conversion but at this rate may just chop the Clio in for an R26R that will hold its value at the very least.

I've just picked my engine and gearbox and turbo plus loom for 300. have to say wasn't sure what I was expecting condition wise but looks mint.
Haven't been this excited since I poked my friend with the big tits twenty years ago :excited::excited:

Was poking through eBay and saw one come on. I looked where it was up for sale and it was at s breakers ten mins from me. I asked to see it running and waited till auction end and it went for 316!! I picked it up this morning and looks perfect. clean, no sign of being pimped. cambelt done at some stage. loom all there from what I can see and nothing cut. was almost tempted to put it up for sale on here.lol

I wouldn't take the engine apart if you don't know what you are doing, i.e checking the clearances on the mains. Also things like head bolts are are stretch bolts and can only be used once. I'd just do a good health check like comp check, leak down and check the bores with a scope. Taking it apart when you don't know what your doing can result in bigger problems.

Looks like I need to keep an eye on eBay. If I do the conversion I will be going with the R26 gearbox.
