Vibration issues

I've got a vibration problem that's getting gradually worse - It basically feels like I'm driving with square wheels (they're not bent at all).

I can feel vibration through the whole car - steering, seat and pedals at pretty much all speeds however it gets worse at higher speeds. At motorway speed the steering wheel starts to wobble side to side, like the wheels are out of balance - but they aren't, I've had them checked multiple times by different people and recently had 2 new tyres - also tried swapping wheels front to back - nadda.

If I drive over some rough road it feels like the car is hopping, it's especially bad on the stuff approaching roundabouts (sorry, no idea what it's called), feels like the front wheels are going to fall off.

I've had the entire front end checked a few months ago including drive shafts but all was fine. Just seems to keep getting worse to the point where over the last week it's pretty unbearable and I'm hesitant to drive it.

If I let some air out of the tyres I get less vibration and given that it gets worse on rougher surfaces - would this point me toward a suspension component? It's the same whether on or off the throttle and if I dip the clutch - so I presume I can discount transmission/clutch etc?

It's been to a local specialist and local dealer but they can't diagnose it. This was a few months ago now so maybe it's worth a trip back.

Any last ditch ideas for me? I'm VERY close to just getting rid for a Scirocco because it's been like this for about a year now.

Apologies for the long post, just trying to be as descriptive as I can. I'm losing it, lol, ready to set fire to the damn thing and cut my losses.

a broken damper maybe?

someone on the rs forum had something similar and in the end was the gearbox/diff that was faulty...

Have you checked the tracking?

I know you have checked the wheels but tracking?

i'm getting a wicked vibration through the pedals at the mo, not sure what the cause is :S

i am due a service though :?

Just to say if it's just started after new tyres then ask them to check the balancing.

One may have come off!

Thanks for the replies.

It was there before and after I replaced the tyres and after numerous re-balances. I've also had full alignment done 3 times in the last 6 months - def not that.

I'll have another look at the shocks but couldn't fault them before and it only had MOT a month ago - passed with flying colours.

@foxspeed - if it's gearbox I'll be miffed, it's only done about 10k miles because I had it replaced at 17k due to 4th syncro failure! I've logged this fault with Renault about 3 times so hopefully if it does end up being transmission related it will be covered.

Booked back in at the stealers next week - we shall see.

Steve, you're not alone with this. It's scary how similar it sounds to what I'm experiencing (especially the gearbox going at 17k... but mine went again at 36...)! I've had the same vibration for a while now, just before having new tyres due to a slow puncture. New tyres didn't solve it and I've had the wheels rebalanced and swapped around a few times now. This thread caught my attention - http://www.clio197.net/forum/showthread.php?t=23191. It might be worth checking if the links are worn. That's what I'll be doing. I'm going to call up BTM and get it checked over properly within the next week or so, hopefully it'll be a quick cheap fix.

I've had a play with them when jacked up but can't see anything wrong. Could just be when under load. I would have thought this would have shown up at the MOT though, but you never know I suppose. Thanks for the heads up.

Nice to hear I'm not alone (kind of, obviously not good you've got the issue to).

It's just driving me up the wall. One of those things that's made the car a chore to drive for the past 6 months and I've spent a small fortune swapping bits out every month lol.
