Strange ticking noise from the engine!

Has anyone experienced a strange ticking noise from the engine...i've revved it but it stays which seems to rule out the timing belt etc... The noise seems to go after its seen some action but its kind of worrying :scared:

I've had a ticking noise from mine for a few months now, most noticable on a warm engine. When it first started I had a good listen and it seems to be coming from the belts area so I took it to mark fish motorsport (He knows his stuff on renaultsports) and he said it's probably 'cambelt whir' and with my mileage (8k/year) it will be ok until cambelt service.

I'd suggest you get it checked out by a specialist though to be safe

Renault engines do tap naturally, been a Renault trait for years now. IIRC something to do with gudgeon pin design promoting piston slap, hmmm.

It didn't make the damn noise!! Gonna book it in next week so they can have a look at it both with a hot and cold engine. Whats the dephaser pulley??

Would it be worth taking this up with Renault as its only just come out of warrenty in the last couple of weeks??

its the pulley on the inlet camshaft that alters the cam timing (phasing relative to the exhaust cam) and is done so by oil pressure - renault dealers "should" be well clued up on its failures!

i get a ticking noise from my exhaust from cold & just take it to be normal...hopefully it is!

Is this an expensive job?? I know there are alot of bits like water pump tensioners etc...in that part of the bay

in a nutshell.....yes! unless you use a specialist dealer if out of warranty - the dephaser usually makes more of a "clack" than a "click" iirc

Specialist = someone who knows lots about renaultsports and isn't a renault main dealer. Think along the lines of TDF, BTM, Mark Fish etc.

This is not sounding too promising...I can't figure it out...will try to get it over the inspection pit this weekend and have a listen underneath!! If its making the noise of course?! :glare:

having the same problem with my car at the moment. loud ticking noise coming and going, I first heard a couple of weeks ago, went out the next morning noise was gone, driving tonight the noise started and they stopped, maybe some debris caught in the fan?? plastic bag or something?? gonna check tomorrow.

Foxspeed is the man and knows his stuff inside out. Gotta say RS cars are notorious for cam belt/ timing belts and electronic problems.

Does it sound like it whurring a bit "whurr click whurr click" like that
