Shakedown at Donington Park went well. I'm waiting for the official Javelin pictures and I'll stick some on here. I don't have any in-car footage I'm afraid, I'm figuring out a hard-wired remote controlled GoPro setup and haven't sorted it yet.
I'd rented a trailer for the day from a local Brian James dealer, they gave me the A4 2.0m x 5.0m bed with tyre rack. It's the perfect width for the Clio, but 5.0m is a bit too long. It's just confirmed to me that the 2.0m x 4.5m bed is the one I'll probably end up buying. I loaded up the car Tuesday afternoon and strapped it down with my lairy flouro yellow straps.
The forecast was good so I went with the R888R and Michelin slicks:
The Discovery tows like a dream. Got there in good time and started unloading into the garage:
I'd packed breakfast, so munched on that on my camping chair with a coffee whilst the paddock started to fill up:
Who should roll up next to me but another white Clio with a yellow Supreme Motorsport sticker and some home-made aero, who turns out lives local to me, small world! We'd conversed on Instagram but didn't realise he was on the forum (

This is where I don't have any track pics yet I'm afraid. The morning session didn't start too well, the marshalling at Donington left a lot to be desired. For those who don't know, the pit exit leads into the braking zone for Turn 1, you approach on the left for a third gear right hander which just happens to line up perfectly with the pit exit. On numerous occasions the marshall at the end of the pit lane was waving people out into traffic. Three abreast into Redgate and the chump at the end of the pit lane is just waving people out.
Unfortunately I found out the hard way when
@nicked95 was waved out in front of me, I readjusted my line but got my braking all wrong and ended up carrying way too much speed into the corner and ended up bouncing over the gravel. Not my finest moment! The pit lane issue kept happening so I spoke with one of the Javelin organisers and complained about it. Their view was that you had to look behind you to check traffic whilst entering the circuit. Not so easily done when you're wearing a helmet and strapped tightly into a 6-point harness! The whole point of having a pit lane marshall is to let you know when the coast is clear! Madness.
By 10am I was in the gravel again at Redgate, I'd spent some time chasing a Caterham and was catching him and preparing to pass when he got it all wrong mid corner, span in front of me and left me a choice to either T-bone him or bail into the gravel. I chose the latter and we both beached in the gravel. Red flag and brought back to the pits on a low-loader.
While I had the car up in the air cleaning all the gravel out the Caterham driver did come over and apologise, and someone from Javelin did come over and say the marshalls had reported it wasn't my fault and was taking evasive action so I didn't get a slap on the wrist.
I had a break and a brew and let the adrenaline settle and went out again at 10.40 and really got into it, the car was performing fantastically I began to experiment with lines etc. I actually stayed out for an hour and only came in at 11:40 when my fuel light came on, probably the longest stint I've done. The car soaked it up, oil temperature rock solid at 100c and never moved.
I started the day with the Gaz Gold (22 damper settings) on 11F/7R then wound that up to 13F/9R which felt better.
By lunchtime, and after chatting to
@R27WTF to compare notes with lines etc, Craners Curves was flat in 4th on the R888Rs. That took a few laps to figure out, it went from a dab of the brakes, then to not braking but having a security lift, ending up with a 'fuck it keep it pinned' attitude. Letting the car run out wide at the bottom and then straight lining the braking zone to the Old Hairpin seemed to feel the best. Feels good until you're following someone who doesn't quite have the same plan and they brake halfway through Craner Curves. Yep, brown pants.
Around 2pm the sun had come out and the track was getting warm so I put my big boy pants on, took a couple of brave pills and bolted the slicks on.
It's the first time I'd driven on full slicks and was a bit nervous about the horror stories from the TrackBaguette crew about snap oversteer, but after giving them 2-3 laps to warm up they were ace. I'd increased the stiffness on the dampers to 15F/11R which gave enough stiffness balanced with some nice predictability. The slicks were just laugh-out-loud quick, the more abuse you gave them the hotter and stickier they got and I was just in the groove, only getting passed by the really quick stuff.
The slicks meant that I was carrying even more speed into Craner Curves which meant I was hitting the limiter in 4th on the way down. I then started to shift up and take Craner flat in 5th. This is when an issue cropped up where the car was jumping out of 5th gear and leaving me in neutral on the way into the braking zone of the Old Hairpin. Not good. It would stay in 5th if I kept my hand on the gear stick holding it in gear, but that meant taking Craner Curves with one hand on the wheel. No ta. Instead I spent the remainder of the afternoon lifting in 4th so it just clipped the limiter without needing 5th.
The ZPO shifter is rocking back and forth on/off throttle, the car does have Powerflex engine mounts and dog-bone mount but they might be knackered. In speaking to Matt I've ordered the Pure Motorsport setup and I'll get that fitted before the next outing:

Had a cracking day, and despite some dubious driving standards from other particpants, managed to come away unscathed.
