Question about disassembling a steering column?

I have a non-reach adjustable steering column. I'm thinking of buying a reach adjustable column off of eBay (non-sport) and combining the new adjustable upper part with my existing lower part and motor. as that is where the sporty tuning is. Would this be possible?

I would have to ditch the steering column lock, but from looking at photos it seems like the two halves are interchangeable.

If anyone has ever split a steering column assembly this way, does the final shaft simply slide on the splines of the motor shaft?
 
Would it not be easier to get a steering column out if a full fat version with the cup chassis? Therefore getting the sporty steering action with extra adjustability.
