Porsche 944 drive - Now I want one.

I love my 200 to bits but also am a very die-hard Porsche fanatic. I spent some time with a very respected Porsche specialist yesterday to look at a couple of 944 S2s he had. I'm a 911 die-hard but have started to appreciate the looks of the 944. I'm developing the itch......

It is hard to find a good one nowadays but OMG, did I see one yesterday! It was a 1991 Red 944 S2 with only 52k miles. It's interior was as fresh as a daisy (cream) but hardly a mark on it. Tonnes of service history.

I didn't drive this one but another. I really didn't know what to expect of it, being used to a 911 and the Clio but I was shocked how good it was. The engine is a Porsche built 4cyl 3.0 pushing 211 BHP. The torque was amazing and I was generally taken aback by how fast it felt. This was a 1991 car that felt new. It also seemed to get quite alot of attention, something I wasn't expecting. It's got such retro appeal.

The car even had full electric seats and all the other luxuries and what's more, everything worked.

Now - I'm really struggling deciding what I do. The red one is 10k and will be a sound investment going forward but I love the 200 equally but I can't have both Clio and 944.....

It's funny that I never would have given this a second look years ago but the design in my opinion seems to be getting more striking.

Anyway, if anyone here ever fancies going down the 944 route, find a good one and they'll blow you away how well they drive.

Cheers

don't buy 944, they alway break down alot.

911 FTW!

They are pretty hardy cars if you get a good one. I know an owner down the road from me who has D-Plate and it's covered 183k miles and with servicing has never broken down once. The one yesterday was one of the best I've ever come across.

I've love 911's, and appreciated my GTS after driving the 944 I confess but I was genuinely shocked how well it drove bearing in mind it's age. I'd also love an old 911 80's Targa but money is not stretching that far :-(

The only car I got overtaken by on the 'ring was a 944. It was marginally faster than the 197, overtook near the start of the lap and only just out of sight by the end BUT it was modified (not sure how much but it had a full cage).

Personally if I was looking for a porsche I'd be buying a boxster, sure this will be a fair bit more capable than the clio when in the right hands

Is the red car in question at a certain Mr Rabys? If so, tell him Darren say's Hi! (I used to work with him for years at T911 mag)

Agree on the 968CS comments as well, over the last few years they have all be snapped up tho and demanding really strong money. A tidy 988 Sport not to be sniffed at either, especially if you're looking at 10k's worth..

Yes, indeed it is mate! He's a top bloke isn't he and very helpful. He's writing for GT Porsche these days amongst other things since he's sold T911. This car's in their next issue. He's told me today that a potential buyer is having an inspection done next week on it. It'll go quickly which will be gutting as I just don't think I can do anything that quick.. The boss of the household is not letting me grow my family to 3 cars! I'm currently working on Plan F

The Sport 968 as you say is a nice buy, few more of them around. I'd not look to track a 944/968, rather get one as a small investment and occasional driver.

Cheers

as an ex 911 owner i was always told low mileage is not necessary a good sign of a good engine 52k in 22 years is really low if your going to use it you might find the gaskets bushes and seals are past there best. so i would look at putting aside a couple of grand over the next 12 months. but as a 911 owner you'll know this already. otherwise a great car and great classic looks that are timeless

Agree 100% with you on this!

968 ClubSport. I would have bought one but they don't sell them over here

A mate of mines caught the track day bug and turning his into a full on track slag.

Those are some not very cheap fibreglass panels too.
