Megane engine swap spoil originality?

so whats your guys views on this? obviously i know its popular and I've thought about doing the swap myself but do you think it can spoil the originality of some of the rarer colours like liquid yellow and alien green? theres not many around in the first place!

what do you guys think?

Yes it's spoils originality but if it's done correctly you could argue that it's what Renault should have done?

I think as these cars become older, it's going to become much harder to find one that's truly standard/original - even from the smallest of mods, such as different brake discs or pads. Often, changes to aftermarket parts are done because it's more cost effective that way - i.e. a Scorpion exhaust instead of an OEM Renault. Usually though, mods are done because it's what the owner wants for their car in the moment.

My point being, that in some way or another, the originality will always be spoiled on the majority of these cars, because changes will have been made at some point down the line, for whatever reason.

So if someone is going to do the Meg conversion, it will be done so they can enjoy the car as much as they can whilst they own it, without a massive amount of thought about how it might affect resale values or the originality.

I say, if you want to do it, then go for it! And enjoy it as much as you can!

I paid over the odds for a standard low miles R27 because that's what I wanted and paid for the piviledge. I like my cars standard or with OEM upgrades. Would I buy a Megane powered Clio, no, but I do admire those who have done it. If I did change anything on my car I would make sure it could be reversed back to original.

I actually bought an original new 182 back box for my Cup. Not cheap but my car is totally standard with low miles so I'm trying to keep it hat way.

Is there anyone with a Megane conversion that's had bother selling them on? What about insurance?

We've covered this before. I think the 197 F1 and probably AG 200 Cup with Recaro's and Speedlines will become quite desirable in X years time, but what are you going to do with your car for the next 10 years? Seems a waste to keep it locked away, unless you can afford to. Then there's maintenance on top of that. And what will you actually do when it's worth something? You'll either keep it for fear of further appreciation and FOMO, or sell it and regret not making the most of it. Will be down to how much you want to enjoy it vs some kind of financial return.
Hope that doesn't come across as arsey!

Like any other modification if it's done tastefully and done well then it's absolutely worth it. In my opinion it transfers the clio into the car renault should have made.
The only thing I'd say is don't go into the conversion looking to scrimp and save on the main parts ie engine gearbox and clutch etc as your only opening yourself up to issues down the line.
I'd say if you have a totally standard limited edition then don't do it. If it's not standard and/or your not worried about getting rid later on then who cares about originality.

I think it'll also be interesting how the Meg does in future in terms of rarity/value I guess quite a few are getting killed for their engines. May therefore be quite rare in future too

Hopefully a liquid yellow 200 cup will become desirable in the future.

Let me start this by saying I totally understand those who do. I'm sure they're fantastic.

But for me I wouldn't. Originality for resale value I'm not fussed about but keeping things as Renault intended makes sense to me. The cars are absolutely fantastic from the factory, especially in Cup form and they're an absolute hoot to drive.

Sure they could do with just a bit more punch, but for me, I wouldn't want to lose the thrill of a high revving NA engine.

In my opinion, there's not a great deal you can do to these cars that will make them any better. Just get them set up right and drive it like you stole it.

I am tempted to buy a really cheap 197 or 200 to do a conversion on and keep mine na.

See this is where it just doesn't add up for me. For that money you could buy a cheap 197 and strip it completely and make it into a complete animal for a track toy. For the price of the conversion you could make a REALLY fun track car.

I'm just very much an NA guy. Even though my next car might be supercharged

What cars that?

Currently saving for an Exige V6 Sport 350 mate. If I get my head down and save properly I should be able to buy outright adding the money from the ///M. But my car is rising in value all the time and I love it so much, I'm in a proper spin about it to be honest. I'm going to get to where I can afford one and see where my head is at.

If all goes well, it's a decision I'll need to make in the late summer.

Wow what a car!

Yeah it's always gutting to sell a car you properly love. Puts very high expectations on the next car!

You do seem to love your ///m! We've definitely not seen enough pictures over here of it though
