LY200 - too loud or blow up again, taking bets!

Nah wasn't at mapping session, funny though cus they mapped it in 3hrs which I always thought was way too quick (my previous standalones have taken a full solid day each time).
But it made good power and torque so, other than needing a bit of work on transient to smooth low speed throttle, I assumed it was at least otherwise healthy.
Nearly took it to the local whiz mapper around here (Ray West) at Christmas, but what with changing plans and bits never bothered, doh! As he would have picked it up in time :'(

sorry to hear that mate...hope you manage to get her back on the road soon...

Perhaps the K20 is best option now? In reality finding the right car and then having to fit the k20 into that is going to take longer than holding out to get it put into the Clio!

Don't think torching it would be great idea, nearly done in the past after blowing engines and turbos, didn't have the balls !
As Chris said, put the K20 in. Someone will need the block in the future. Maybe karma ?

You already bought the block etc hoping you could reuse the head?

freakin unlucky mate! I do have a 37,5k miles engine for sale but it's in the Netherlands and i'm not sure if i can compete with uk prices. Didn't you buy a low mileage spare engine, or was it just the head?

yeah bought the block with the view to reuse the head etc. However the detonation has apparently mullered the head and valves, not seen pic as yet of the head. The det was bad enough to take chunks off a forged piston, so we're talking full on damage!

no I won't be torching it lol, could pay a tramp to steal it though haha!

There's some activity in the background now though, could be a pleasing result, of course knowing past experience it could just be more expense and still end up with an engine-less car!!!

What price, I shipped an engine to Netherlands once, wasn't too bad. You got gearbox too?

Yeah full package mate, enginge, gearbox, clutch etc. engine only comes without anciliaries as i used them on my megane engine.

i after €2000 so that would be about £1550. As i said that probably isn't very interesting as prices over there are way more attractive

The suspense is killing me, what's going on in the background?! This thread is a roller-coaster of emotion!

Rest of the rebuild stuff turned up now:

Went for another set of Supertech's with inconel exhaust ones
IMAG0677-750x410.jpg

Dropped it all off at Tech1 and grabbed a pic of the failed engine, you can see the bore at TDC!
Doesn't show up well in the pic but it's crazy....explains the oil consumption. So the plug was fouling due to oil, which is odd because it seemed a dry foul (carbon) rather than a wet foul (oil).
IMAG0678-750x410.jpg

Sourced via Tech1 a spare 197 head which has/is going to ALD for full porting etc. So hopefully get that back in 2-3 weeks. In the mean time fingers crossed no more disasters (please!)

Looked at the R3 manifold as was going to take a template for ALD, however wasn't worth the time to get the verniers out - you can see it goes down to the stock port size and profile. So other than optimising the valve seats and port throats, probably little value in opening the exhaust ports out on the head. Anyway all that will be left to ALD, I've seen some mk2 F4R's making cracking power on his heads

Better hope so, any more trouble and I'm filling it full of garlic and baguettes, setting fire to it and crashing it in to Dieppe! ****ers can have it back! :uk:

Crikey....

All sounds a bit expensive...I'm a little confused with what your plans are now.

Are you HonnnnnDAAAAAAA'ing the 200 or rebuilding the 200 with a boggo engine?

Honda's going, but not rebuilding with a bogo engine. Rebuilding the old engine into a new block and new everything else that needs replacing, result will be essentially just swapping forged pistons for head work. This will actually make for a better engine because I believe the cams do not have enough overlap for a 12.5:1 static CR and the result is too high dynamic CR which makes the knock threshold way too close (as has been evidenced!!). So should be able to on the new engine dial in a bit more ignition advance and be safer (plus it'll be mapped by Ray West who know's his stuff) - that's the theory anyway, but more airflow from the head is always going to be a good thing. I'm also going to have a wideband lambda installed feeding the ECU and also make sure the knock sensor is feeding the ECU too, I may even have to install an external motorsport spec knock control setup to fed in to it.

Probably would have been cheaper to buy a new engine from Renault, but at the time I bought the block/pistons we thought the head and valves were ok etc. Nothings been straight forward with this car tbh so I shouldn't be surprised but it's always had the right parts thrown at it. Nothing will change from that perspective with this build even though my heart is not in it currently. I'm sure once I get it back and mapped properly I'll get the itch. But right now I'm a little bored of Clios and think the ITB's and R3 suspension money would be best put towards the next car.

Looks like an epic spec mate, hope you'll have more luck this time! Don't know the new mapper but why don't you bring it to EFI-parts? Chris is a top notch bloke who really knows his stuff
