I take it the heavy duty clutch will be more suited for competing?
Is it just that it's tougher, like a higher tolerance threshold or something?

Quaife + lightened flywheel are seriously good together.

Clutch plate has more springs, pressure plate higher clamping pressure.
The oem clutch, gearbox, synchros, diff etc are still operating perfectly, only upgraded due to the transmission being out to fit the diff.

First day of competition with the Quaife in place. Wow.
Installation was an absolute pain for the poor buggers I got to do it, having to sacrifice a shaft due to it being seized in the oem diff.
Despite the fitting issues, for anyone tracking one of these cars on a regular basis, fit an LSD & you wont regret it.

Holy Smokes, thats one lovely profile pic! Keep us up to date on that LSD, I reckon money well spent from what I've seen on here.

what made you go for a quaife diff, steve?

Along with the usual track events, I compete in tarmac rallies which are held over several days on closed public roads thus the Quaife (Torsen type diff) is ideal for my needs.
If I were just doing circuit events solely, a Gripper (plate type diff) would have been an option.
But after the weekends event im positive ive made the right decision.

on the german clio forum, they're raving about the wavetrac diff. someone over there asked wavetrac, if they could produce a diff for the clio. they could and did. took them almost a year to come up with it, but the first units have arrived a couple of months ago.

Looks amazing Steve. Has the lighter flywheel made much difference too? What event was this?

Steve,

would you help me to understand, what a lightened flywheel means/improves for our car?
also the h/d clutch? i guess last longer, but would appreciate a bit more detailed answer
I already got the quaife!

Hi Flacsi,

Uprated clutch just gives slightly stronger clamping pressure, I cant notice any difference under foot.
Lighter flywheel lightens rotating mass thereby improving throttle response in theory. In practice its not much different.

I simply replaced the clutch assy & diff seals & bearings & 3rd gear synchro etc as the gearbox/diff was already out & it was convenient to do them.
The oem drivetrain is pretty good in my experience (never had the crunching gears issue others report) & there was no issue with any of the items I replaced, diff was fine, clutch was fine, gearbox was fine, it was simply preventative maintenance & if you can upgrade as you go then why not improve things a little.

As you have the Quaife fitted I wouldn't bother with the other bits, the diff is the big improvement as you no doubt already know.

Hi mate, wouldn't bother with flywheel, big improvement is in fitting the diff.
Event was a local combined motorkhana/hillclimb, nothing important, finished 1st outright with FTD (fastest time of day) which is reassuring (more cheap gold plastic for the missus to dust).

Interesting to head that the flywheel didn't make much difference. Great result though! I think a diff might just be on the cards in the foreseeable future. Not excited about the prospect of fitting it myself though... Cheers

..the diff not whining at all? How much extra sound does it generate if at all Steve?

No whining or noise (my car is already noisy though:d), just hooks up well & fires out of corners. Nice bit of kit.

Keep in mind its just a Torsen style diff & not a plate diff (which can be very noisy). Ive had KAAZ diffs fitted to my cars before & they sound like the driveshafts are about to snap (work well though).

I noticed a whine from the quaife. It's not loud but audible at low speeds.

Out of interest Rick, who did you have install it and roughly how many hours did they quote? If I could do it myself I'd buy one in a heart beat to reduce costs

I get a little chattering etc on start-up when cold but nothing noticeable once warm.
You'd be a brave man to take on installation yourself, its a pig of a job. Better to pay a specialist who has experience in fitting them imo. Allow about $3k-$4k all in to do the job properly.
However once you get it on track, experience the excellent power down & see the improvement in lap times its certainly worthwhile.
