Help with No Start (does not turn over at all)

It's been sat for some time.

It would historically turn over with a tricke charge or jump pack, and run fine, but knowing the battery was on the way out it wont hold a great charge, so i bought a new one.

  • fitted new battery. this was much harder than anticipated due to the difficulty of fitting the tie down clamp. i could have knocked any of the associated battery box connections (as tehre's a bunch of electrical/ecu stuff surrounding it?)
  • it turned over once, but didn't start. it now wont turn over at all. doesn't even try.
  • dash does not light up, only response to ignition is a whine at top/back of engine bay.
  • hazards work, headlights do not. lock/unlock works.
  • battery has good voltage, jump pack also doesn't help.

any idea what to check? i might try rebuilding the battery box from scratch, but i'm not sure how to successfully fit the tiedown bracket again. it may also be threaded, as that's why i struggled to get it back in in the first place (i don't think that was my doing..).

local garage is going to fail i think, they don't know clios. linked my rambling build thread message on the same topic:

Check connections, Cables, and Earth straps first.
It's odd that some lights work and others do not. A bump start would prove that it's the starter or a connection to it, but I don't think it is that.

Has it been left outside in the rain? Is there any moisture/damp/mould inside the car?

Yea there was some mould in the car, only on doorcards tho.

Sorta feels like a connection/fuse issue, given power to some stuff but not others. If i wasnt busy sorting a windscreen replacement on another car and a leaky bathroom id have time to work out how to test fuses lol

i should say i'm aware the battery isn't in there

poor car needs some love. seems every renault (especially clio/track) specialist is booked for weeks/months.

refitted the entire battery box/battery and checked all the connections in that area and seems fine.

I don't think it's the starter, as the dash isn't getting power either - before i even consider starting it.

Does the engine light come on when you turn the ignition on? Sounds like you have blown a fuse, have you checked all of the ones in the engine bay especially the bigger ones?

Take the fuses out and inspect visually you should be able to see if they're blown.

no lights at all.

i'll get a screwdriver and prise them out - the big purple (battery protector?) one seems fine? hard to really confirm unless they're on fire/melty.

The big purple is a relay, also check that red cover that goes on the battery there is fuses on there too.

I think the whiny noise you hear when ignition on is just the throttle body adjusting which is normal.
