Hey everyone just after some advice about the 197 badboys

I'm looking at buying a 197 after having my current Golf MK4 1.6 since I passed my test 4 years ago.

Basically i've got £5000-£5500 to spend on a 197

What kind of car can i get for that money?

For that sort of money you'd be looking at a car around 5 years old and at 5 years old they are wanting the cambelt changed, if your looking at them ask if it's been done or will be done as it can be around £700 to be done

Hahaha I haven't been down to have a look yet, live a bit far away (West Wales)

It says the timing belt has been done but nothing about the gearbox

Does anyone recognise the car?

Looks nice that best colour it's only done 35thousand timing belts need doing after five years or 70 thousand

Roughly £500-600 for the belts. Keep a listen out for a cruch going into 4th. Don't worry if it's stiff to engage a gear when cold though, that's 100% normal!!

Shouldn't the belts of been changed by now then?

if i were to offer the dealer cash, bearing in mind the work it needs, how much should i offer?
