Hi mate I got my gearbox replaced april 2012 and it was really tight and notchy but after a few month it feels like any normal gearbox. Got mine replaced through arnold Clark autocare.

Expensive change I'm afraid pat.

mine will be changed in the first qtr of next year. Still currently debating a diff.

I think it might have to wait till I can't put up with it any longer. Is there any gearbox specialists near be in Leicestershire ?

You don't really need a gearbox specialist. If you're changing it over, a competent garage will do.

if you can get yourself a box, I've just been quoted under £400 to change it. Just to give you an idea.

I've just bought my car a few weeks ago. An 09 plate 197 with nearly 80k on the clock. A bit worried about the fact the gearbox only has a 100k life though and I probably wouldn't have bought the car if I had of seen this thread first - 25% gearbox fail rate with replacement bills running way over £1k! WTF :zomg:

Saying that my gearbox is currently really sweet and only suffers from the usual stiff 1st gear when cold and bit of whining on when decelerating in gear.

Think I may change the gearbox oil along with the engine oil in future though - Whats the best oil to go for?

Also is gearbox replacement something that could be done DIY, if i've got the time & patience? I'm used to doing all sorts of work on my old classic mini so changing a gearbox doesn't seem particularly terrifying. Does anybody know whats entailed?

The gearbox doesn't have 100,000 life expectation? Not sure where you've heard that? The cars, when new came with 4 years or 100,000 miles warranty? But everything can still work way past that.

Your car is out of warranty anyway, so you don't need to deal with Renault, a 197 gearbox you can pick up for around £300-400, or get yours reconditioned for similar money, that said, if yours is feeling slick then I wouldn't worry too much.

Just use the genuine oils, they're more than up to the job

Just reading through this thread I saw people talking about 100k life expectancy.

Gona change my oil to some Castrol stuff I think as I can get it cheap at work so can change it more often. I read that the Redline oil was the best but its £18 per quart which is a bit under a litre so looks like you'd end up buying 3 bottles of it too.

Took mine back to the garage I bought it from as it's still under warranty and there going to "get it sorted". I've asked them to stick a new clutch in at the same time, makes sense while the box is out.

I will have a good gearbox for sale in around a month done 53k no issues with going into gears hot or cold and no whines it will be ready in a month as its still in the car waiting megane transplant so if your local could try in my car before you buy! £200!!!

You can't take the results of this poll as any sort of real world figures though as this is only a small sample of forum users. You could change the 'box yourself if you have some mechanical knowledge (which it sounds like you do). This is exactly what I plan on doing if mine ever starts playing up. It's currently on 70k and is as smooth as silk.

My gearbox crunches going from 2nd to 3rd but only at 7500rpm if I change at 6500rpm it's fine, do they only crunch getting close to the rev limit? Also do you think a gearbox oil change will help, I have no idea when it was last done on my car.

Mine is now 4th crunching above 4k RPM. Has anyone bought a box from RSCeurope on ebay or is it better to have it rebuilt? Can't really afford to be without a car though >_<

I've used them but not for a gearbox, I ordered around 2pm and my stuff was delivered around 9am next morning!

Ring up and ask for a discount to save on eBay/paypal fees for them and pass it your way.

Im on the original and done 33k. Gears were a bit funny, so I changed the oil with redline mtl synthetic fluid ( only got 1.4ltrs of the old fluid out), it now runs a treat when cold and get not lumpy 2nd n 3rd gears.

Worth a try. Made a huge difference on mine at high revs

Mines just started playing up going into 3rd over 4,000rpm.

Booked into Renault for a check over, thank God the cars not even half way through warranty

Amazing. The girl I spoke to on the phone this week was adamant that there is no known problem with Renault gearboxes in these cars.

Flol.
