Handbrake problem

Had a problem when I release the handbrake even on a hill the car will not move. This is occurring every time it rains. I've taken it to the dealers with no joy, they can't find any faults. When I get the car moving you can hear a loud crunching noise from the back and then a grinding noise for a few seconds. The car is not even a year old and has covered 4500. I'm worried at this rate ill burn the clutch out. Any ideas as I said the garage can't find any problems. I understand after washing the car or leaving it for a period of time but this is stupid

just having a look! :tomato:

have the calipers been stripped and checked?

they usually get sticky due to road dirt/filth build up and a clean and lube works wonders...

also is the handbrake adjusted correctly? if its done wrong it can cause the calipers to drag!

Had the car back in again, everything cleaned and lubed twice now still the same problem. I've had the car sat with the handbrake on and off still the same. This is only when wet i know nothing about cars but surely this is a calliper problem. The garage seem to think I'm imagining it. If i go out i have to find a place flat to park as its bad enough getting it to move sometimes. I've even showed them a video of the effort it takes to move it and I'm guessing they'll be unwilling to replace the clutch
Any ideas?

take it to the garage, leave it with them and get them to pore water over the wheels with you there.

take note of its location and go back first thing next day ensuring its not been moved (perhaps keep the keys)

and demonstrate the issue.

Had a little argument about this they seemed to think this was like washing the car which i agreed. But the symptoms are exactly the same but virtually every time it rains. They are taking it for 2 days next week so hopefully 4th time lucky they might do something I've not already done myself. Watching them do it sounds like a good idea though

I'm having same troubles with mine
When problem first started I took it straight to the garage to be looked at, all calipers checked, cleaned, greased etc, all seemed to be good for a couple of days but then same problem reoccurring. Back to the garage it went, was told by the mechanic that the handbrake cables were stretched and worn so I agreed to have both left and right cables replaced thinking that this must have been the root of the problem, but no................after a week of having the cables replaced the past 2/3 days (latest this morning) still having same problem, handbrake off and the car doesn't want to budge it's as if the handbrake is still fully applied after releasing it Takes a lot of revs to get her moving and makes a god awful noise in doing so?!?!?!?! Anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing this??

I put this in another thread earlier today if the cars been washed or it's been raining the pads will bind. If you park the car overnight somewhere flat or chock the wheels and for Gods sake don't do a Brian Harvey (EAST 17) and run over yourself. Best would be get someone to release the handbrake and make sure the arm goes to the stop (red arrow) or see if there is a delay. the blue arrow is the 39mm spring used by the scenic I fitted one as I had one handbrake cable not fully releasing so the spring helped the both cables have now been replaced.

The handbrake is a mechanical mechanism which will operate even without fluid in the caliper. Now the original post must be for the latest Clio's so I don't know if the 197 caliper is fitted to the latest models.

Possible problems:
1. Handbrake cables adjusted to tight or sticking (disconnect push the cable by hand it should glide and the arm should sit at the stop when handbrake is normally released with the cable connected)
2. Caliper not working, operate the arm manually (remove the pads operate the arm the piston should move back and forward a small amount if not its the internals or piston sticking the boots do dry up and grip around the pad end neck of the piston which can make them hard to wind back causing them to twist and rip the boot which corrodes the piston also the old screwdriver wind back trick it can slip rip the boot same result.
3. Pads not moving freely when handbrake released (remove pads from guides should not slap about but very little pressure to move them vertically out or back and forward towards yourself use copper grease or lightly file the PAD where it touches guide surfaces to correct it).
4. Slide pins not working, not allowing the carrier to float (get them working or replace them)
5. The cold weather and salt from the roads will leave everything a little tight until some heat or movement is created if you release the handbrake and your on a reasonable slope give it a few seconds, dab the brakes, wiggle your ass in the seat as long as they both release at the same time your OK if one goes before the other then instead of reaching for the keyboard reach for the tools or the phone, this is a thing a Renault specialist will fix and a dealer/normal mechanic will not care about unless something is hanging off. It's not the perfect weather for it but if you check all the brakes pre Dec the brakes will not be a problem come Feb, and another thought the front calipers could be binding also so that's something else to think about front and rear should be worked on twice a year to avoid problems.

Hope this helps someone

It happens to me every time I wash the car and leave it a couple hours. I believe it's because the pads I run ( ds2500) have a lot of metal in them causing the pads to literally rust to the rotor. Since fitting slotted discs the problem only happens very rarely. Like previously stated park it on a flat surface with the handbrake off after washing/rain and see if it happens.

I have a similar issue but i don't use the car for weeks at a time - I've started leaving the handbrake off and putting chocks under the wheels and in gear lol, so much better
