Exhaust blowing help needed.

Hi guys wondering if anybody here can shed some light on an ongoing problem I've had for a while now on my 200.
basically there sounds like a blow from under the front of the car, like a tinny buzzing most noticeable when cold and while driving past parked cars etc, (sounds horrendous). Now my first thoughts were manifold cracked or flexis as I had this before on my 197 and that was the flexis. Now, I have since found out that the car had a brand new manifold put on it a year ago, have been under the car and the flexis still look next to brand new, also had a mirror down the back of the engine but no cracks and no black soot anywhere. Even reseated the first joint but made no difference. Still sounds ****. I've got another manifold sitting here but I'm not away to go to all that work for nothing. If anyone's had anything similar would be good to know thanks .

When it's cold it'll sound like it's blowing but you'll also notice it's down massively on power.

Does it still do it when warm?

Hi mate. Yeah coz it's still on the cold map yeh?!
Once it's hot on idle it's silent as a mouse but start driving and sounds like it's blowing massively. Actually embarrassing. It sounds pretty much the same as my 197 did when the flexis were gone but like I said they look brand new.

Maybe take it to an exhaust specialist to test for leaks

Hi mate yeah it's kinda similar, though difficult to tell exactly on a video but that's when u hear it most when like driving past a wall like you were there.

Yeah, the video can't quite pick it up. I've had it checked over and like you there's no fault when inspected with a bum camera - no soot or anything in the flexi's. Only hear it when the car is under load which is annoying as it won't show itself on a ramp.

Yeah that's exactly it, when under load or first start up in the morning when cold. Sounds utterly horrendous eh! Though I've just found a topic on the forum that suggests this noise is normal???! Find that wierd though as it never used to do it when I bought the car 6 months ago.

Well it's been looked over by a forum member who's a master tech at Nissan and he said there's nothing major going on and they run a bit raw anyway.
The start up thing is absolutely normal as goes once the revs drop under 1k.
Just enjoy it now and maybe save for a KTEC manifold - work of art!

Yeah looks like I'm gonna need to to drown out the sound of the blowing noise . Though had a Ktec on my 197 and was way too boomy so quite fancy a scorpion job

No, manifold only. Scorpion the rest [emoji6]

Sounds the same as mine, quite bad on cold but once the idle drops you can't really hear it and then only happens under heavy acceleration.

Couldn't find any sign of what was causing it so just assumed was vibration or something. No noticeable loss of power, or MPG etc.

I'll just keep driving it until either something goes, or it gets much worse/making it easier to find the fault (IF any fault).

Discounting peeps who have known / obvious manifold / flexi leaks.

Mine can sound as if its got a very slight leak from cold to the untrained ear. But after having had it investigated numerous times - both with standard mani and system AND with new stainless manifold and system.....i think to some degree (From cold) "Thats just how they are".

Once off-choke and warm - purrs like a kitten. Just sounds a little less civil on start-up.............

Thanks for the input guys. So it seems it's perfectly normal. Still an embarresment driving it like that and the fact everybody that's been in the car sais to me.... Is your exhaust blowing??! Ah well just need to deal with it.

its most probably a crack on your centre pipe, most probably in the welds, it wont be visible by the eye as the cracks can be tiny. I currently have the same problem from a custom exhaust

No mate not normal, mine was driving me insane felt like I was driving an old rubbish motor!

Turned out to be a catalyic converter completer broken, I thought it was the above mentions, won't know until take it to a specialist.

Put a video up if you can, it may not capture the true sound but I'd be interested to know if it's similar to my recordings.

I had a bit of a blow on mine and I bought a genuine clamp for the front joint between the manifold and the cat the vee type one, put in on and made sure the faces were properly aligned and gave it a real good tightening and made a big difference. Still a little noise when cold I thought it was the manifold and still could be a crack between the down pipes but very hard to get a look at. I bought a 3 month old genuine manifold to keep as if and when it goes it will by all laws of probability be a holiday or weekend and it'll take 3 days with Renault £600 and no second-hand ones around. I was so paranoid about the exhaust I now have a full spare manifold to back box and I picked up a new 197 genuine back box for £185 then wound up with a second one when I bought the mid section for £110, and the manifold cost £150 well I paid that and gave the rest of the system to a guy if he collected it and posted the manifold to me.

they dont run a choke...just put in more fuel and up the revs...

like most cars they will retard the timing to get the cat up to temperature and this can cause them to sound a bit rough/blowing first thing

we used to have an air leak probe/tester that picked up leaks from air systems or exhausts - not sure if they are available these days
