BTCC Clio Cup

I have been informed that 2019 will be the last year that the Renault Clio will race as a support race to the BTCC.
Renault will not be bidding to stay on the TOCA package after next season.
So you can expect Mini’s to be running round the tracks from 2020.

If that’s true that’s a shame, I’m sure the racing from the Mini’s will be good but it’s always been nice to see Renault representing themselves well. Any idea what’s going to happen to the Clio Cup series then? Is it stopping or just moving to support something else?

I'm sure i read a little while ago they had agreed another contract with TOCA to continue it for a few more years but i now cannot find the article.

It's a shame it's going as i think it is the perfect support series for the package. Admittedly the Mini's are putting some incredible drivers out there but it's been a relatively cheap championship to run in, i bet it will increase now. Maybe Clio cup will become more affordable in place of the Mini's.

It’s 100% that Renault UK has pulled the plug so they will not be a supporting class after next year as the 3 year contract with TOCA finishes next year.
The Gen4 race car is eligible to race in the Michelin Clio Seires next year where the Gen3 car has been racing since 2014.
They both will be using Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres, which also has been opened to the Gen2 car but they will be on Toyo 888.
Running a Mini in its championship costs just the same as a Clio in its championship and you will need £10k per round to race in either, racing at top level is not cheap.

I knew the Clio's were around that sort of figure but thought the mini's were cheaper. I obviously had the wrong impression. It's a shame though as without it being a proper 'support' series the Clio's will be a much lower profile now and can't see it being a feeder series quite as much.
