Both wheels have play?

ello, recently brought a clio, about a week ago it starting squeaking when turning stationary or low speeds also when going about 50+ sometimes the steering would feel lose almost and concerning.
I took it to a garage today and there was excessive play in both wheels, wasn’t paying much attention to him as I was on the phone to my boss but I’m sure he said steering joints are fucked and he can’t do it it needs to be done by a Renault specialist? Fair enough but i take it steering joints are track rods? Lower ball joints? Need advice as I’m not great with cars
also if it is track rod ends do I buy them myself and have them fitted or go straight to a specialist ? Thanks in advance

Could be either... Or all of the above, steering arms are quite common for play and most garages should be able to do them, not a huge cost either:

Probably worth doing track rod ends at same time, lower ball joints are another common wear point / consumable. They can be bought individually via R-Sport but you really need to go to specialist who knows what to do, other garages will try sell you the whole hub which will cost you hundreds! Read more here:

Hope that helps, you might want to double check with the garage where play was before getting deep pockets.

Okay thanks both for the replies.
I had a feeling it was, Booked into a specialist Monday so il get them to have a look, think I might order the track rod kits and get them done. And hopefully there’s nothing else cheers guys

Lower hub ball joint.

Wait, I’ve just took this photo as I wasn’t sure and I’m sure this is where the play was coming from when he showed me? I’m not sure but is that part of the track rod? ‍♂️ He said steering joint and not track rod so makes me wonder

As Chris has said that is the lower ball joint. Where are you so we can recommend a garage to take it to to get done?

The give away is the squeaking noise when steering at low speed.

okay cool thanks a lot guys.
I’m in leicestershire but willing to travel If it’s fairly local to leicester for a decent service
Will garages mind if I brought the parts and just have them fit them? I’ve been before with brakes and disc they went arsy about it

Try Mick @ Diamond Motors in Long Eaton, Aaron's Autos in Derby or Mark Black at Midlands Renault Specialists in Worksop.

I expect most will want to supply the parts. If you do want to source them yourself then R-sport are the people to use.
