Have a look at this on Autotrader, tell me what you think. Is the cambelt still an issue? Sorry there's a mention of it.

Will be for cars of that age. They all need to be done by now.

Don't buy black! I don't really know enough about meganes in terms of spec. I suspect they still come in "full fat" and "Cup" versions, so do your homework.

soft. The original 225's were more of a gt cruiser, no way focused at all. The trophy started to address these issues with much improved steering and stuffer chassis.

Look for a trophy or cup at least.

The black one needs a lot doing. Some went to view it and weren't willing to part with 3k. I'll just look at leisure. No rush. Thanks.

These cars are not for everyone to be fair. Perhaps you will be better in a meg, but if you crave a 172, why dont you just get a 182, slightly newer, you could even get a trophy with your budget.

Prefer a Meg I reckon Chris. I loved the power in the one I drove.

The one you drove was a heavily modded one. Meganes, being turbod aren;t exactly the same feeling as you get from a 172/182/197/200. I know as I've stepped into a turbo.

Will be faster of course!

Again as people has mentioned, you've got a basic clio without the cup chassis, dont make that mistake with the megane, if you want to do it, do it right and get a fully packed one, the best colour with the best options (recaros, cup chassis, etc etc, but your going to pay for this obviously).

This is why I suggested a clio 182 trophy, you know you are going to like the car as you loved the 172 and its the best in its class.

Way I see it is, it's a Meg, keep the Clio and slowly modify it or something else entirely. Not sure about a 182 cos of the age. It's the reason I traded my 172.
And you surely mean full fat 197? Mine is a cup but yeah basic. Ride wise, supposedly better than non cup but just no air con keyless entry etc etc

Had an R26 for 5 months as a second car to the 200. Sold it on as just didn't find it as much fun as the 200. Mapped and quick but found it a tad boring to be honest in comparison.

I don't understand why you are saying you preferred the 172 because it was 'rawer', but then are looking at Megs which are a step in the other direction IMHO.

shells2074 hi, I was on the same feeling as you when I got the 197 at first. Had my 172 for 7 years and loved every minute until the point it went for the 197. At first I thought the 197 was not as fun as the 172 when I first got it so I started doing small mods to it like got the wheels painted from silver to anthracite, painted the calipers Red got a cup spoiler bought recaro seats put a panel filter on it put red stuff pads on the brakes. They are all mostly cosmetic mods but this really made me fall in love with the clio like I did with 172. But what I did find was the power delivery is different to the 172 so I feel you have to drive it differently to get the best out of it! To be honest all the small mods took me about 3 years to do and I absolutely love the 197 and will be def hanging onto it even if I manage to get a megane sport at the end of the year. I get to drive alot of different more expensive more powerful cars in work and have to say I still find it amusing how easy the clio puts a smile on my face.

I'm simply talking about getting straight to the power which my 172 had. From a standstill it's much quicker and no flat spot issues at all. It just feels too safe to me. I like a car like a fairground ride, the thrills and adrenalin when your foot hits the metal. I'm not comparing the 172 to a Meg at all. I'm saying I liked how the meg drives and also my old 172. The 197 as it is just ain't cutting it.

You should get your car on a rolling road might help telling you were your car is power wise. I got mine on the rollers last Feb at a rolling road day and I guy had his 200 on before mine he a
Had previously said he thought his felt ok and his ran 168bhp and mine ran 189bhp and mine was 3 years older with 35k more turned out his flexi on the exhaust manifold was split and he did not know! Don't know how right enough! Maybe a starting point to see how the car is performing.

The 197 needs revving then it will give you the power. Looking at a naturally aspirated production based competition cars like m3, 190 cosworth, ford escorts, etc. from nearly any point in the last 40 years, they are pathetic until the revs start rising. Maybe you are changing gear too early. The 197 has a more racey cam than the 182 and 172s which means that you get more power but it's higher in the rev range. If you look into engine tuning there is a lot of knowledge on this subject in the world of historic rallying mainly with mk1 and 2 ford escorts.
