275 Cup-S to 200 Cup

Hi All,

Has anyone made the change from a 250/265/275 Megane to a Clio 200 Cup and been disappointed or regretted the move? After owning the car for a few months, priorities might have to change (adult sort of things) along with a longer commute and the car is too special to be a motorway muncher. Not for definite yet but if anyone has any thoughts on this then it would be super helpful.

Thanks!

Personally I’d avoid having a 200 cup as a motorway muncher.. purely for the fact most come without air con the interior is drab! It’s meant for a B road blast not a marathon slog!

Don’t get me wrong I love mine and I used her for 90mile a day commuting but I’d considered looking at a different spec.

Sadly most make the change upwards from clios to megs..

I'd probably go for a full fat Cup to be honest. It wouldn't obviously just be a marathon slog, barely that! Probably about 50 miles a day potentially but it also comes down to being a monthly track car (hopefully) and a project car really.

I realise this but just wondering whether anyone has been in the same position as me. After being in a friends car, it made me smile from cheek to cheek and thought it might suit the bill for a replacement if it comes to it.

I do 75miles a day on motorway to work (I have have done 22k last year and 21k the year before) and habe done for 2.5years in my 197, you definitely don't want to be doing that in a 200 cup! They're even stiff than the 197 cup, but mine has non-cup suspension and eibach springs, and I am going to be selling the car soon (as I've said for like half a year) it's not the comfiest lets just put it that way!

It would end up being a 200 with a cup pack in reality, probably changes to coilovers and a bit of track day fun!

Don't get me wrong, I love the car, it's so much fun and not as uncomfortable as I'm making out, but it does get on your nerves after a while and I've been doing the drive for 9 years nearly!

I've done it in a diesel Bora, an S14a 200sx (road and then a track setup), an E39 740iL (this is the clear winner!), an E36 328i track car, an R27 F1 197 (only for 5 weeks and someone wrote it off), now this 197.

It's not comfy, the thing that helps is stuff like cruise control, so picking a cup packed one over an actual Cup will help, but I'm warning you it is not great, especially stop start traffic (200sx lost this battle with its 6-puck clutch)

Oh yeah, I don't expect it to be the most comfy car in the world or anything like that.

To be honest, driving the Cup-S is a doddle on daily duties and on a B road hook it's incredibly capable. I've got a track day coming up in October with it and I'm starting to think I'll just go all in with the Megane but we shall see..

I've just heard so many good things that I am very tempted purely to do adult things, enjoy my daily commute and have a car that still makes me smile

Yeah I think it's the torque of the 275 that would make it a doddle, sitting at 3700ish rpm at 70mph isn't fun haha.

Na it'll be fine, I've done it for 2.5years and all around the country, so yeah it should be fine, it's the country lane bashings that make up for the lack of comfort, I regularly take scenic routes home to fall back in love.

It sounds like a car that for all it's short comings, you can't help but love. However, I shall see what I do with the Megane.. maybe it's just in need of a decat and a cage to add more theatre

I do about 75 miles a day with a 200 cup and even with no cruise control, I really don’t mind it at all. I have stuck a load of sound proofing and a decent stereo in the thing tho.

I’ve tried so many different cars with this commute and I always get tired of the comfy ones, as long as there’s no excessive droning and the car gives me confidence in it then I’m happy knowing that I can play when I want to.

The worst thing about a cup is no auto electrics windows, you have to hold the button until they’re all the way up or down.

I have a 275 nav that is basically specced like a cup-s (this is my "daily") and I have a 197 for sprints and hillclimbs (I have to drive the clio to the track as I don't have a trailer)

I'd much rather do the commute or motorway miles with the meg. Feels so much more solid. Just a nicer place to be. It would also be easier on fuel. My clio is dreadful on fuel and sits over 4k revs on the motorway as it is a very early 197.

Love the clio don't get me wrong just wouldn't want it as my only everyday car. Love the meg too and could never track it even though I'm sure its unreal.

Which do you find more fun to drive? Do you get that thrill from the Megane?

Even without sound proofing and being a 200 Cup, I think I would be absolutely fine plugging in an aux cable and listening to music

I think they are both fun tbf. (I probably have more fun in the clio because I track it and drive it hard all the time) The megane is awesome with the LSD and power. The clio feels slow. I also get more annoyed in the clio when in traffic haha its just not as smooth. The clio just wants the pedal down all the time. Where you can do both with the megane.

Abingdon less than a month away, maybe I'll take the rear seats out and just see how it goes

I wish my Clio had an LSD... also I kinda wish it was RWD and had a turbo - it has roughly the same fuel economy! It's good fun tho. I never thought I'd like FWD in any shape until I discovered Clios and it was a total accident.

This is what I was trying to get at, it needs more revs to pull off from a standstill, has less torque so you end up looking like you are racing someone....just to get up to speed etc.
Why I thought the Megane would have been a better daily, and you kind of agree from the sounds of it.
