Lightened flywheels

Yes,I was thinking about it and even got one used stock flywheel for comparison but never got the time to 3D scan it and make it (was talking to my friend that's a CNC specialist and he said it's was not profitable enough in such small batches with the material that I would like to use).

Instead, we're still doing the lightweight crankshaft pulleys with the new material (24% stiffer and 18% lighter). The "old" ones were great - Ph2 should be awsome. :smiley: :smiley:

The ph1 was not exactly heavy! It makes sense not producing lightweight flywheels if there is not enough profit in it. There are a lot of people wanting to save weight on their Clio's though, thats for sure.

If the standard flywheel is only 6kg then that's relatively light (relative to other cars standard flywheels). Has anyone looked into removing material from the standard flywheel? I know my local engineering works charge about £80 for removing material and re-balance.

I did it on my stock flywheel. No difference at all due to the fact there's not much material to remove (I believe the difference was 300g). And I spent 100€ for the removing the material and balancing.

Yeah that makes sense, and backups my initial statement about the standard flywheel being relatively light in first place.
Guess different material is the only (and more expensive) way to go.
 
PMed on the lightened crankshaft pulley and wheel spacers, maybe go the lightened flywheel if you have found time. Where you also planning on doing a different intake to the R3 maxi?
I turbocharged my engine so I didn't pursue it any longer.

The flywheel is not profitable enough with the material that I would use given in mind the small batch(es).

I did the front carbon intake for the V6 airbox based on the first part of the R3 Maxi airbox and it was great.
Lended it to Flacsi so he could copy it but never got it back.
 
And I also made a carbon intake manifold. But it wasn't much better than my modified V6 airbox setup, but it was much louder so I went back to my initial setup.

As mentioned above 6kg is light for a flywheel. I know of one company in Aberdeen tha lighten and balance flywheels and have done many for Subaru and Evo guys this would probably be the most economic route given you won't be lightening that much anyway.
 
So having a good condition standard flywheel lightened and balanced properly by a suitable Engineering company at a fraction of the price of an aftermarket lightened flywheel is wasting money, mmm let me think about that one

If a 5% lighter stock flywheel is worth 1/3 price of the 34% lighter brand new aftermarket flywheel is OK to you...mmmmm...you should think harder.

And I'll repost my post. Just in case you missed it.

I wouldn't bother with the flywheel if it's not atleast 2kg lighter than stock.

And TBH, better investment would be my lightweight crankshaft pulley that's 26-30% lighter than stock.

That's just my 2 cents.

I think I would be fitting a dampening crankshaft pulley like a fluid damper rather than a lightened one, there is lots of data showing vibrations in the crank at high revs caused by lightened crank pulleys on medium to long length cranks.

This whole weight thing is only half the story . It's got to do with rotational inertia . The more mass you can remove further from the center the better . The pic I think you posted shows the machined slots on the outer edge , which is exactly where you want to remove the mass . The 300g you talk about needs to be accelerated right at the outer edge of the flywheel . I'm surprised you didn't get a notable improvement . 42081fbb988788d93774eb3b709d3624.jpg

I agree with you.

However, unfortunately for me, I haven't noticed any improvement with the lightened flywheel.

This, however, is a whole different ball game. 4.4kg.

This customer uses the lightweight flywheel in combination with my lightweight crankshaft pulley.
