heart in mouth, -nearly lost it.

**sorry if this is in the wrong thread (keep getting moved) ***

So, coming home from getting my new tyres (only had the car a week) heading towards the crossroads at the traffic lights near home, rain in the air - and on the ground, decided to test my new shoes...

Now, I don't by any means profess to know the limits of these cars, but I had heard they grip pretty stubbornly, coupling this knowledge with the pristine new tyres I knew I had in the locker, I thought this next decision may have gone differently. Maybe you can tell me what went on...

As I took the sharp left, maybe going 20mph at a guess (maybe a bit less) I very subtly 'chucked' it into the bend, fully expecting the car to carve a path as if on rails and pull away looking and feeling a large amount cooler than seconds before. This didn't happen.

Instead, as I took the bend, my grip came unstuck and to my surprise I found what I think was my back end drifting out in what could have been my first brush with oversteer? (My old piece of junk used to understeer viciously, but the back end had no personality)

Luckily in the split second that I found myself out of talent at the first hurdle, the car, or I, did something that put everything back in its place and I pulled away all straightened up and lovely. This may have looked cool, except for the fact the guy waiting at the lights facing me had no doubt caught my look of sheer terror as the event unfolded and lets just say I won't be scoring any man-points anytime soon as far as he's concerned.

Other than laying low in shame for the next few weeks, can anyone shed any light on what I might of done wrong? or is this feeling of tasting my own balls a normal way to take a corner quickly in these machines?

oh yea, and don't tell anyone about this.

Definately partly down to your new tyres.

Didn't happen to lift off the power a bit mid corner did you? Probably a bit of lift off oversteer in play here too.

Probably wasn't the best time to test out your new tyres to be honest! Glad all is well though!

I'll never try anything like that with new tyres on.. I remember pulling away from the garage after getting 2 new T1-R's on the front and i couldn't grip the road for about 5 miles at least. I had to physically spin my wheels a little bit to burn them in a little.

Another thing i may add.. One day i was driving a back road i drive on a daily basis and this one day i decided to nip on a little bit around the bends.. They are really fun bends but for some reason on this dry day my back end snapped out on me and i was the same as you. I about sh!t myself but the back end snapped in quite quick. Touch wood it's the first and last time in 3 years it has happened. But i know the car can trick me into that now so always watch yourself even with the positive things you hear this car can do!

Definatly the glaze on new tyres i used to go to my local bike dealers on saturday mornings a lot of folk pick up new bikes on saturdays suffice to say ive seen some accidents and near misses lol Blokes ragging off on brand new rubber

New tires and wet roundaboust are fun. If you push these cars you can get them to slide a little before they snap on you. All good fun.

You could always claim there was a massive diesel spill on the road and although it wasn't your fault, you somehow managed to save the car in a heroic manner?

Defo inexperience of being in the new car and new tyres.

If you get oversteer floor the gas!

New tyres take about 500 miles to scrub off the release agent they use when manufacturing them. Until this has been worn off the tyres will be very slippery (have you ever felt the surface a brand new tyre?) and you can easy end up out of shape.

Be carful!

brand new tyres and wet equals sensible driver mode im afraid mate. they will still be covered in release agent etc

They don't always respond to being chucked into a corner as well as one may think, roundabouts always used to catch me out but keeping it smooth and fast helps.

Be under no illusion, it was the car that got you out of this situation, the ESP system on these is fantastic ( best I've ever driven ).

People think they get kudos for switching it off at trackdays but the truth is it very rarely intrudes and when it does so it's never premature.

I'd have loved to have seen your face!!!

I think a combination of new tyres and this lovely ''summer'' weather making the roads uber greasy has caught you there mate. Don't worry about it, just don't do it again. These cars will wag their bums for you if you let them or if you provoke them, once you're used to her you'll be fine. I've done it once by accident and I fully sh!t my pants, I think I may have even closed my eyes... But since that, apart from the odd time when I've provoked it I thihk I've only had one or two little wags and I was half expecting them when they came.

Scrub the tyres in a bit more before you start learning the limit, I'd hate to see a ''just killed it'' thread.

This ^^^...although the tyres in my opinion are only a tiny tiny part of the reason for this moment you experienced.

You've owned the car a week, and by your own admission you don't know the car, but still you decide to chuck it into a corner, with a nice wet road surface, on new tyres because you heard they grip well.

Slow down, calm down. Book a trackday. Explore and learn the limits of your car in safety, not when there's innocent people minding their own business on the other side of the carriageway.

I speak from experience having had a few moments back when I first took delivery of my 172 Cup in 2003. No electronic aids to assist in that one...I shiver when I think back to how I drove that over the first few months. I'm lucky to still be here to be honest.

Very wise words..
