197: Warming up the engine?

Best to drive it as soon as you start it, warms up quicker this way, minimising the wear and tear caused by cold oil.

It does have a different cold map, it will run a richer mixture. This will reduce carbon dioxide emissions (Whilst increasing all other emissions!!) but will also help to get the engine up to temperature more quickly.

How does running it richer heat it up quicker?

Doesn't more air equal more heat?

The thermal energy in the combustion process is created by converting the energy in the fuel into heat, by burning it. Therefore if you can burn more fuel you can release more thermal energy.

To burn the most fuel you need to run slightly rich, this is because even at 'ideal AFR' you have some lean regions in the combustion chamber, running it slightly rich reduces the amount of lean mixture (This is why you get more power running rich mixtures).
