UR 197 F1 Team R27 - Progress Thread

Phew, I was worried you were going to squirt the push to start button

Not too sure if only reverse, that's strange. My only thought, and it's purely a guess, could be that when the car is in reverse, the engine may rock a different way to when it going forward. If the wire to the TDC sensor is being stretched during that movement, then perhaps the ECU is momentarily losing its signal and causing a stall. This is just a guess as I can't think of anything else that differs between forward and reverse motion. Do any of the engine mounts have excessive play? Does the gearlever move around under acceleration in either direction?

Now you mention it...there is slight movement in the gearstick...I've bought a Powerflex upper torque arm mount, might be a good idea to grab hold of a gearbox one you think? I never thought of it that way, makes sense though!

I don't know, but I can't think of anything else that would cause a difference between forward and reverse motion.

I've got powerflex in my upper torque arm and it stops the engine moving around no end. I think the lower engine mount is the other mount with the biggest impact on preventing a rocking motion of the engine rather than the gearbox mount. I removed the the top engine mount powerflex insert on mine due to noise and vibration, I think the gearbox mount may also introduce excesive noise and vibration if only a road car.

The lower engine mount has two bushes on the same plane, one small and one large, tried to upload a photo, but failed. You can get a powerflex insert for this.

I'm willing to be stood corrected, if I've got it wrong, but my thinking is changing the bushes in the torque arm mount and lower engine mount are the best options to reduce engine movement whilst not adding too much noise and vibration.

Just ordered the below today;

2x Anti roll bar links
4x Anti rotation link nuts
2x Front shock absorbers (Clio 200 Cup version) (01.2007 to 08.2010)
2x rear shock absorbers (Clio 200 Cup version)
2x Shock absorber top mount kits
2x Anti rotation links
2x Rear lower spring locating mounts
2x Rear upper spring locating mounts
2x Lower wishbones
2x Upper front swivel hub ball joints
2x Lower front swivel hub ball joints

The garage are supplying the full belt kit including pullies and water pump.

I did try to get separate wishbone ball joints so that I could replace the old rubber bushes with SuperPro poly bushes. However, the ball joints were not available in time for the car going in, so new wishbones bought instead.

All the parts are genuine Renault as I was a bit concerned as to the quality of pattern parts. This has no founding whatsoever, but I thought Renault parts would offer decent quality.

I decided not to get new inner and outer track rod ends at this stage as I plan to put a 200 Cup rack in at some point soon. New inner and outer track rods were £160 plus fitting. Whereas a new rack is only £320.

Holy S**t. That is some list you've ordered. Shares in Renault must've gone up today based on your spending alone:grinning:
From experience fitting new suspension parts makes everything that little bit tighter and better. Fitting the list you've got is like buying a new car!
Enjoy

Just ordered my Royal Steering Wheel retrim in the following spec;

Full Dark grey Alcantara 9002
Red top stripe
Light Silver 412 stitching

Photos to follow once it arrives.

Will endeavour not to kill myself with the airbag during change over. Even with the battery disconnected, airbags scare the heck out of me.

Only just caught this post.

Epic - such an 'upgrade' from a failing Renault wheel. And a benefit every single time you get in the car.

You'll love it.

I can’t wait until it arrives, I’m like a child at Christmas.

I’m more excited about this than my suspension rebuild, I get the benefit of the wheel even when stuck in traffic as I can just look and touch it. Sounds a bit weird.

Depending on the condition of my suspension when it is removed this week, I will probably put it up for sale.

Parts will include;

2x front 197 Cup shocks
2x rear 197 Cup shocks
2x front 197 Cup springs
2x rear 197 Cup springs
2x front top mounts
2x rear lower spring mounts
2x rear upper spring mounts

Car sits at 56,000 miles and I think they’ve been on since new.

I know the shocks and springs have surface rust, but from what I’ve seen so far, the shocks have no leaks and no springs are snapped. Obviously once off I’ll be better placed to see and will take loads of photos.

I will create a for sale topic next week once I’ve had a chance to look at them.

I guess I’d be looking at around £100 the lot plus postage, using ParcelForce 48.

All ready for Thursday.

Only one thing better than a boot full of new car bits......... when it’s empty because they’re all on the car

HA HA HA - how very true.

Researching and ordering i enjoy.
Waiting for parts in a state of excitement and watching the Tracking home-in to you is 'great'.

But having the parts ready in your 'hand' waiting for the garage to fit ? Thats truly shite isnt it !!!

The drive home after collection Thursday is going to be epic.

GOOD LUCK.

love the boot full of goodies..when is it all being done/fitted??

I drop it off tonight for the work to be done tomorrow and possibly Friday too if need be.

Belts, pulleys, water pump and gearbox oil also being done too.

I’ve got a 120 mile round trip in it at the weekend to take my mother out for her birthday, sadly it’s all motorway, but may get up early and go the back roads.

Not too sure how my mother in her mid 80s will cope with the firmer suspension or getting into my Recaros, we usually take our other car, but I can’t leave it at home after having all this done. I’ll be like a child with a new toy.

Got the projectors fitted a couple of days ago, a huge thanks to @l33th3tr33 for these. Brilliant condition and extremely well packaged. A gent of a seller.

Still OEM, but just a better OEM than they were!

Got the car back today, not as plain sailing as I’d hoped, but money and time spent now, means hopefully a few years of less expensive ownership. Who am I kidding, I can just spend the money elsewhere [emoji16]

I have to say a huge thanks to SWR Autos in Stirling for their work on my car. Their communications and workmanship is first class. They always answer the phone very quickly and chat through any issues and give great advice.

So, apart from the long list of parts previously listed, I also required;

4x new genuine Brembo front brake pads.

Mine were down to a couple of mm of material. Note to self, check things more regularly.

2x new rear red calipers

As mine had corroded beyond being serviced. One had no boot at all protecting the piston.

2x new rear stub axles

The ABS rings were shot. One had already had a bodged liquid metal fix. Sadly the ABS rings cannot be bought on their own, hence the whole stub axles.

1x swivel hub

One of mine had corroded so badly the lower ball joints could not be removed, even after heat, drilling and probably lots of gratuitous swearing.

My drive home was fabulous. A huge thanks to @sevenfourate for his advice on springs. The Eibach Pro Kit springs are incredibly supple at slow speeds. There is absolutely no chatter on uneven surfaces, nor bangs and crashes over potholes. I’d even say they may be more compliment than my 197 Cup springs. Whilst I can definitely feel a difference, it’s not massive, as my car felt nice and tight before anyway which probably points towards my old stuff still being in reasonable condition.

What SWR also found was that my manifold has had the flexi joints removed and replaced with rigid pipes. Whilst there is no evidence yet of the top pipes fracturing at the head, I think this is only a matter of time.

My old shocks had no leaks or pitting to the pistons. The springs were also fine with no evidence of impending breaks. I’ll get these up for sale if anyone is interested.

Cost-wise for all the work, [emoji43]

Side shots please! My Eibachs are FINALLY being fitted Tuesday!

I’ll get them posted tomorrow. I’m blown away by how compliment they are whilst still controlling roll and dive. For a road car I’m of the opinion they’re perfect for me.

Ride height wise, I don’t think there’s too much of a drop, but I’m not bothered about how it looks from the outside, I was interested in how it feels when I’m inside. However, I know it’s horses for courses and that’s important to others and I’m certainly not knocking those that like a slammed look.

Here’s it on the standard Cup set up.
